Hello Everyone,
Wanted to say hi to everyone on the forum. I am new here and have some questions on SWFA scopes. Have a Remington 700 SPS in.308 caliber (just purchased), and want to get a SWFA scope for some 100 to 500 yard shooting and hunting. Which SWFA scope do you guys recommend? Mounting rings? All you help is appreciated. Frank |

The 3-9X would be the best choice for both of those activities. Depending on what you're used to 9X may not seem like a lot out @ 500, but a fixed 10X is hard to use for hunting at short range.

I don't normally recommend any scopes, but your request cries out for one.
SWFA 3-9x42 SS TPS rings, I would use medium height, many would use low. EGW picatinny rail. Just FYI... I don't like 3-9 scopes, but I like the SS3-9. And by the way... welcome to the OT. Edited by Kickboxer - April/13/2011 at 16:37 |

The 3-9 is an awesome choice as is the 10x HD version which is also Mil Mil. I have both and the 10x does have adjustable parallax and the 3-9 is not adjustable but not a problem as it works really well. If you will be doing anything under 100 yds or in low light definately the 3-9 because you can dial down to 6X in low light to brighten the image. If you are really really rought on equipment fixed power scopes dont have as many moving parts so the HD is Heavy Duty and High Definition Glass.

Guys,
Thank you one and all for your good advice. I am a noobie when it comes to scopes, so all the info and help I can get is appreciated. I am still trying to learn what the numbers mean on a scope and so forth. Trying to figure what I need scope wise before I invest any monies. |

Bitterroot Bulls,
Which one would be good for long/short distances? The 6x42 The 10x42 or the 16x42? Thank you for your replies |

The 6x has a wider field of view (getting on target) and larger exit pupil (low light performance) than the 10x, making it more suitable for hunting, IMO. 6x is plenty of magnification for shooting game-sized targets at 500 yards.
I have both the 6x and 10x SS scopes, and I would choose the 6x for a hunting rig. |

It is really hard to get onto anything under 100 yds with a 10x. The 6x will be a lot brighter in low light conditions 7mm exit eye pupil as compared to a 4.2mm exit eye pupil - its a big difference and I would definately go with the 6x having owned both. If you can convince youself to spend what it takes to get the 3-9 it is well worth the difference and sometimes you can find a used one on samplelist.com

Urimaginaryfrnd,
So what you and Bitteroot Bulls are saying is that a 6x is preferred over a 10x for short range shooting and long distance shooting? I may not hunt a lot and will be target shooting at different ranges. Also, as Bittteroot Bulls pointed out the 6x was a wider field of view than the 10x, what does this mean. I hate to appear as a dumb ass but Im trying to learn. |
