Well if I recall right they had a light barrel on them which would inevitably get swapped for a cannon so the initial accuracy doesnt bother so much... And as you can tell I am one of them mauser fans So to me if I can get the 798 for the 308 build its a b e a utiful world if not the 30.06 Would be the hunting rifle and everything would most likely be under 200 and if I can be accurate at that its no wonder they didnt make it for more than 2 years... Am i correct in saying that they did not come with a heavy barreld version?? Or am I loosin my mind again? Damn musta forgot to take the meds today haha just kidding

I would say get what you want, I think a good gunsmith could barrel up a 798 into a real shooter for you.
If it were me, I would get a mil spec r5. Not much needs to be done to them. |

That would kind of defeat the purpose of a project rifle though wouldnt you say?

Not if the purpose is an accurate, reliable rifle. The project would be the mounts, optic, and most of all ... practice.

Valid point but any rifle can be made accurate Both Remy and Ruger have proven reliability mounts are the only thing that in the case of Ruger vs Remington I thinkI would go with Ruger because that intigrated setup of theirs is in my opinion an amazingly rigid and fool proof system... But to each their own.. I have been finding out that for an aftermarket parts availability that Remington 700 is by far the best choice.. Everybody and their brother seems to make parts for them for obvious reasons... And I think thats the way I am going to go for a build project and for a hunting setup I think im going to try and find one of their 798s... |

My project on my 5rmil spec took me 1 1/2 yrs to complete,so if your looking to take a good rifle & convert it into a great rifle this is what I did.
Bolt--changed to a Seiko extractor, then added a custom made knob like the Badger
Triger job on the X trigger, down to 2#s,done by Robert Hart
Recrowned the barrel, again by Robert Hart
Glass bedded & lapped the barrel
As I liked the stock,I added Marine Tex for grip
Substituted a SVL pad for the flimsy rem recoil pad
While I was in the stock I filled the 6"x1.5"x2" void with lead shot & chaulk
Then I added a Karsten cheek weld
As I like to shoot single shot I put a single shot sled in
Last but not least I did a camo job using all tree parts & branches using 10coats of Krylon paint & 5 coats of clear satin finish, that also included my Harris bi-pod.
My first rebuild & now ready to do my Rem police in.223 The total cost for all the mods & work was about $650 & it was a joy to do.

Haven't seen anybody mention this, but it is my understanding that:
Remington 798 was made by Zastava. It is now called the Z98, or something, and is imported and sold though EAA and USSG. |

My daughter needed a camera so mine took a hike 3months ago & haven't had the money to buy another just yet[wife decided she wanted all new disahes & a dinning room set] after she found out about my new Swaro Z6I scope.
Sorry I can't send a picture but all it is ,is a small square aluminum block[.25" thick x the length of the housing chamber x the width of the floor plate]You must remove the metal housing by sliding it out in order to fit the sled in it's place. It has a machined grove on top to allow the rifle case to seat properly so as to not have any problems when you ram the shell home!
I can't mention other sites but you can always do a search for single shot sleds.I some times use one in my AR15 When I feel the need to shoot a 75 grn nosler. Those sleds come in the form as a standard magazine with no spring, check them out.

Aside from not being a good PD rifle, there are plenty of mods that can be made to a rifle even if it is already a good shooter. Like stickbow, I added a Karsten cheekpiece (http://stonetip.com/diagrams/karsten/karsten_b_style_cheekpiece_installation.htm) and since those pix were taken added a Seekins DBM, which is fantastic. I'm running Alpha mags with it. Also, although it was not strictly necessary (and was kind of done accidentally by the gunsmith) it was glassed at the same time. (I was going to do that myself as I did with my LTR in an H-S stock, but what the hey).
Now she's also rocking a Seekins SRS base where the front swivel studs used to be and an Atlas bipod. So no point in not starting with a really good rifle in the first place. I think the 5R is one of the best kept "secrets" around. I've found no need to do anything with the barrel or bolt. |

I haven't been out to the range with it yet, but can tell just dry firing that it is better than the Harris - and well it should be for over twice the price! I got the BT-10 model, which is the least expensive but also requires a picatinny rail. I bought Seekins SRS for two rifles so that was another $80. |
