I'm sure this has been debated a million times on here so I am sorry to be the new guy asking the same dreaded question.

I just purchased a Rock River .223 ATH Hunter with the 18" heavy barrel. I want as much of an all purpose scope as possible. I would like to do mostly target shooting anywhere from 50-500 yards. I have buddies that shoot long distances which I enjoyed doing using their weapons.

I was thinking I would just go out and talk to a few people and buy a scope and it would be easy. Well needless to say after a week of research I think I am more confused now than ever. With all that said right now I am between...Whacko

Viper PST 2.5 - 10 x 44 (Undecided on reticle) $599.00

Leupold VX.R  2 -7 x 33 (with Illuminated Fire Dot Reticle) $435.00

Leupold VX.3 2.5 - 8 x 36 (Undecided on reticle)

Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5 - 16 x 42 (mil-dot) $565.00

I know this is a lot to give advice on, so any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Have you looked at the Minox ZA-5 1.5-8x32?  Nice little scope.

Hey Flanny.
Welcome to forum, enjou the ride Wink.
Ok.. Since your caliber is 223, it might be an idea to take a look at the Nikon 223 series.
I bought one last year and it lives very well up to my thoughts about it. You'l love the target turrets in case you havent played with that before.
Check it out at       www.nikon.com       There´s some nice videos there to.

Well now that I looked at the Nikon 223 series is there a noticeable difference in the close range of the 2-8x32 and the 3-12x42?

Please offer any suggestions. it looks like I can get the 3-12x42 for around $350

Is the difference in x32 and x42 worth giving up a little in the short range target acquisition?

Thanks again,
Mike

Hi Mike.

I never tried the 2-8x32 compared to the 3-12x42 ( that's the one i have), but i can't imagine you will see a difference in close range, on those scopes.

Sounds like a good deal on that 3-12x42. Go for it.

Last night i tried to compare my Nikon with my Leupold 4,5-14x50 Mark 4.
I was pretty surpriced with the result.
Every 5 min. i checked them on a 200 yards distance. The Nikon were fixed and the Leupy was mounted on my rifle. Both set to 8 times magnification.
There was not a lot of difference on them as it got darker. When it was REAL dark the Leupold was slightly better, but not much.

To your last question, i would say, yes it's worth it. Go for the 3-12x42. It's a good all round scope at a good price.

If you want an all-purpose scope, then I would suggest Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42.

It is the most versatile option out of this group by a solid margin.
