For a long time I've been intrigued by the TC Contender/Encore. The ability to change barrels and get a new rifle, plus being able to order a barrel and not have to go through a dealer is appealing. So, I took the plunge and ordered and Encore in 22-250 with a heavy 26" barrel, plus two Custom Shop barrels; one in 6.5-284 and the other in 280 Remington Ackley Improved. The 280 AI will be used on my once a year elk hunt and on the occasional hog hunt. The 6.5-284 will be used often for whitetail deer, hogs, mule deer, antelope, etc. The 22-250 will be used for vamints, predators, and targets, but nothing over 200 yds. My question is: With a $1200 budget, what scopes would you buy to go on the 3 barrels?

Why not just 1 top of the line scope with QD mounts on each barrel ? With no shots over 200 yards a scope in the 4 to 12 or 14x range should be fine.

Good idea, but I can't sight it in every time I want to use it, and I haven't seen any QR mounts or scopes I would trust to clamp it on and change windage and elevation.

So far, here's my answer to my own question:
Easy one first: I'd put a Conquest 3-9X40 on the 6.5-284.
On the 280 AI, I think I'll get a Leupold FXIII 6X42. I'm starting to like fixed powers more and more.
On the 22-250, it gets more difficult. I'd like to try a Bushnell 4200 6-24, but that scope is just too big. The Encore is very compact, one of the great things about a single shot, and the 4200 would look wrong. I'm thinking about the Leupold VXII 6-18X40 or the Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5X40. Both are about as small as you can get in a big variable, and I've owned both and know they are OK scopes. I'd be interested in the Weaver GS 6-20, but I haven't heard much about them. |

I recently purchased a Weaver GS 6-20 for a .204 Ruger. I am very pleased with the optics of this scope. In comparison to my Leupold VXIII and Nikon Monarch mounted on two of my other rifles, the Weavers is hands down brighter and clearer. The adjustments are also very true on this scope. I have not had any experience with a 4200, but I would highly advise mounting a Weaver on your 22-250.
