Probably not a 25ft like that one, but I was once pretty good with a 15ft.

I can deifinately cast a throw net that is how we used to get bait - finger mullet on the Texas Gulf coast to catch redfish. Nice net he has larger than any that I have.

Our guides would throw the nets early in the morning to catch bait fish
before we embarked on our fishing excursions while down in Cabo. It's
quite an impressive skill to watch and see by some of these locals and fisher guides.

When not in Cabo, I generally don't fish with bait so no need to brush up on the net skills; for me the skill is in not needing to fish with bait.
Nice pic Wouter!! |

Beautiful photo, thanks 8shots!
The guy is standing on a raft !! I'd say he is somewhere in S.E. Asia and fishing for food and not bait. I watched some guys cast- netting shad below Ft. Gibson dam, once. After each haul, they would throw all the little rough fish (carp, etc) hard against the rocks to kill them... no reason for it, really. |

That was a beautiful net toss...
Back in another life, when I was a heavy equipment operator, my boss had a shrimp boat. We used to go out sometimes and I tossed a few nets. Never anything like that, though.

A little short story...
While back on a Short Leave went and chartered a boat in the KEYS, a friend of a friend type of thing went out for 14 hours. Started cutting fish up in the morning and mixing with oatmeal of all things asked what for said he said don't worry, went out for miles and miles and miles... Guy gets up and brings out this "chum" oat meal and fish... throws two scoops off the back and grabs a net like the one pictured tosses it out their and scores hundreds of BALLYHOO (balywho ? sp.??), Looks at me says you want to try I said sure. 5 tosses later and only maybe 20 or 30 netted he looks at me says you done I said yup and he says let me try one more, sure enough throws it out 7-10 yards off the back end pulls the string and sure enough took us both to bring it in with another couple hundred netted... (the rest of the story goes like this, caught yellow snapper, yellow tail, amber jack, barracuda that were swallowing the yellow snapper and then cought grouper used the grouper to catch some baby hammerheads and 1 tiger shark, and the rest is just memories)... Could not believe fishing the cycle so to speak kept on trading in for larger fish. ANSWER I CANNOT THROW A NET TO SAVE MY LIFE or at least I wouldn't eat enough to keep me FAT... i was pretty good with a 12 foot cast net.... 20 years ago. Lived in Florida for a year and a half during high school and got lots of practice catching bait. It's definitely something you have to practice though. I'd be surprised if i could manage it without catching myself now.

I have a 20 footer, and I thought I was pretty good. That man is an artist, and on a small narrow craft too? My hat is off to him. He is the MASTER!!!!!
