In your opinion what scope would you consider to be the best for the money. Take in to consideration the durability of the product, the features eash brand offers, and the clarity is a must!

All of these brands have several product lines which would rank very differently, so this poll is hard to answer.
Generally, BSA, Barska and Tasco are fairly uniformly crap (with exception of Tasco Titan which is actually a decent though not exceptional scope). Then there is the question of what caliber you plan to use these on. SInce this is a varmint forum, I assume recoil is not a consideration. I will also assume that your are referring to fairl high magnification scopes with a topo end of somewhere between 16x and 24x. Then, Weaver Grand Slam and Bushnell Elite 4200 offer the most for the money, with Burris Signature Select being just half a step behind in the performance to money ratio. Ilya |

What makes you say that Barska, BSA and Tasco are crap? What makes others better, they are just tubes you look through.

They are not just tubes. The desing and execution of the optical
and mechanical systems is sufficiently different between different
makers. Quite a few have proprietary lens coating formulations.
Barska, BSA and Tasco are cheap chinese scopes with poor quality control. These contain some good general information. http://opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=80&PN=1 http://opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=2169&PN=1 Ilya |

Has anyone noticed that the Simmons 8 Point isn't very clear? I bought it to put on my Ruger 10/.22, I will probably just live with it for the time being.

With this thought process everything cylindrical in shape (straw, pipe, pen... etc.) could be used as a scope?

I'm curious how koshkin's Sightron SII would have made out in this poll.

Yea they are all just tubes you look through---- but what you see at the far end is what makes the difference. You said yourself that your Simmons wasn't very clear...... DUH.
You obviously need to do a side by side comparison and see for yourself what the difference is. My personal preference is Leupold scopes with a 30mm tube. But in addition to my extrremely expensive Leupold Mark 4 scopes I have several other brands including a couple of $30. Tasco s from wallyworld and for $30 they are pretty good. If you want a varmit scope you want 10X or more - the more the better but you need to ask what else do you want to use it for. Too high a power and it will not come on target quickly. I doubt you are in the market for a $1000. scope so I will suggest you buy a (Tasco built )Super Sniper in 10X. (click me) SS10X42 This will work just fine for you for $299.95 and you can easily dial in correction for windage and elevation. I have a Supper Sniper 20X and that would work just fine for you, as would the 16X ------you choose, but I recommend the 10X for you.

I think he is right fellas... I mounted a piece of PVC on my varmint rig, it was 15 inches long and 1 inch in diameter to fit the rings, glassed it with some 1/4" plexiglass and added a couple toothpicks for windage and elevation and I'm grouping sub MOA out past 600...

I went with Bushnell only because of the Elite 4200 series. They have 95% light transmission and four fold power range change. One piece tube, and focus from 10 yards to infinity. Good price and made in Japan. Note: I'm not saying they are the worlds best scope, but has a lot of features that some higher dollar scopes don't have. |

Would have liked to Sightron in there also. The SII 3-9X42 is a great scope for the bling!

I'm in agreement with Ilya on this one... Tasco and the rest are crap!!! Because you often see haze at the edge of the scope objective and it gets fuzzy on some of the ones I have looked for.... When it really counts what is least likely to let you down??? Certainly, if Barska and the rest were great scopes then gun writers all over America are wasting their time and money buying those Leupolds and Burris scopes. And why aren't these "great scopes" making the covers of gun journals all over America??? How many professional shooters ever use these scopes for anything than the butt of a good joke??? NOT many, bench rest shooters I have ever met, would ever consider anything less than a high end Leupold for major bucks at any competition anywhere!!!! Not if they take their craft seriously!!! Look at what our U.S. Armed Forces are using on the ends of their sniper rifles, and I think that you will see, that any of those cheap scopes mentioned never make it on a rifle when your life depends on quality optics, with repeatability, and reliability; time after time after time!!!! Buy one of these scopes and what you have bought is an unpleasant surprise waiting to happen at the worst possible time imaginable! Unless it is for your enemy's pellet gun!!! Scott |
