Topic: Scope selection for a rimfire trainer Posted: March/21/2011 at 17:55 |
I'm trying to reason my way through scope selection for a new Savage MkII TR in .22LR. I want to set it up as a "trainer".
Assume the primary rifle is 7.62x51 with a max effective range of 600M (I know, I know - just go with it for the sake of the exercise.)
Then assume the trainer is .22LR with a max effective range of 300M (again, just go with it.)
Now, assume the primary rifle is scoped with a 10x Mildot.
Wouldn't it then follow that a logical scope for the rimfire trainer would be in the 5x to 6x range? This would give a similar "experience" within the effective range envelope; putting the same 10x on the trainer would be overglassing and wouldn't present the same challenge as would the 10x on the primary rifle. A given target through the 10x at 600M would appear approximately the same size through the 6x at 300M.
The same idea would apply with the .22LR limited to 200M - a 3x or 4x would work.
Or am I nuts here?

I'm following what you're thinking and yes it's a cost effective route for training. I'd go with a fixed 4 power for the trainer personally.

Cost effect .22lr vs. .308 sure is but don't cut yourself short on the glass.for example,SS10x HD on the .308 & non HD 10x on the .22lr.If you feel your over glassed get the SS 6x.The 10x non HD goes down to 15yds, works perfect on both my .22lr.It's nice to be able to see the little holes out at 100yrds also & you still have the mil dots.

I also agree that the SS 6x would be great for your application.

I'm really leaning toward the SS 6x42, thanks for the reinforcement.
I think I need to play with the 2.5-10 I have on my 10/22 and see if 6x would work for me. I'd very much like to try some long range rimfire shooting but the majority of the time I'd be shooting at 50 and 100 yards.
I'd even consider 4x, but I'm unaware of anything in this price range that would work.
I'm not looking for BR type accuracy, so I really don't want to overglass - this is meant to be a trainer for precision rifle.

doesn't have a mildot but the IOR hunting 4X might be nice as well.

I really want to stick with a mildot - otherwise it wouldn't be a trainer!

Then 6X SS would be the best fit, durable as heck and holds resell value, plus you could move it to the heaviest kickers out there and it would still hold up.

OK, I think I have a plan:
1) Return the 3200 10x I ordered the other day when it gets here;
2) Mount up the Tasco 2.5-10x from my 10/22 on the new TR;
3) Shoot for a few weeks or months with the Tasco at both 6x and 10x;
4) Based on what I learn order either a SS 6x or SS 10x;
5) Profit!
Question about the rear focus SS 6x and 10x - does the entire eyepiece rotate when adjusting the AO, or just the ring that's marked with the distance scale? I'm wondering if rear flip-ups are annoying to use...

I ended up thinking this through a little more and ended up ordering a SS 10x and rings this morning. My eyes aren't getting any younger and I think I'll be better served with a 10x on the .22 and a 16x on the centerfires.
If I'm wrong, I'll simply move the 10x over to the R700 and order a 6x for the .22. If I'm right, I'll order a 16x for the R700. In either case I get to replace the miserable Tasco on my 10/22 with the Nikon 4.5-14 that's currently on the R700.
