    Posted: December/31/2005 at 00:45

I just purchased a used pair of Swarovski 8.5x42 EL's that were manufactured in 2001 and wanted to know if they had the swarobright coating on them.  Also, are there any other differences/updates between the new 8.5 EL's and the ones produced in 2001?

Thanks,

Huntndad

All EL's have Swarobright. The only difference is in the focus. Your EL's probably have the "slow" focus whereas the newer EL's have a "fast" focus, meaning it takes less revolutions of the focus wheel to go from close focus to infinity.

Which is better, I don't know....? I understand Swaro is offering an upgrade to "fast" focus, but it's something like $250.00. I can't imagine it's worth it.

The EL line and Swarobright were introduced in 1999. As Buster said all El's will have the Swarobright. That same year is when the SLC models were given Swarobright coatings.

Thanks for the info.  I thought all EL's had the swarobright, but wasn't sure.  Your also right about the slower focus.  With the bino's I purchased, you have to turn the focus wheel 2 1/2 turns from close to infinity.  I don't mind this though because you only have to turn the focus in a lot if you are looking at something extremly close.  I think I'll enjoy these bino's just as much as a new pair and I saved $650 and you can't even tell they are used by looking at them.

Sounds like you got a pretty decent deal on the EL's. I wouldn't worry one bit about the focus. I think it'd only be a concern if you find yourself going from close to far and back to close on a regular basis, but that's not likely to be a problem. Some guys actually prefer a slow focus because they feel it's more precise.
