Will a 85 grain slug at 3500 fps shoot flatter than a 110 grain slug at 3100 fps?

What slug would would be better suited for range shooting?

For true long range shooting a heavier bullet is usually better as it will have a higher BC.  It will be less affected by the wind and have more energy on target.

I'm shooting a 25-06 and am on the fence about what load to use. I plan to use it for range shooting mostly with a hunt from timt to time and not have to re-dial the scope for a lighter or heavier load.

Shoot flatter out to what range? The lighter bullet will usually shoot flatter at shorter ranges, but as range increases, the heavier, higher b.c. bullet will pass it up. What bullets are you looking at?

Personally I would go with the heavier.  3100 is still smoking fast and it will give you more energy and penetration when you hunt with it.

I shot that bullet out of a .257 Wby at 3450 fps, and it was an incredible combination!!

I have heard this arument both ways. Some say the lighter faster bullets are affected less due to time of flight, and other say heavier bullets due to more energy etc are affected less by wind. Both given results backing up there claims. Was reading this on another forum. Chuch Hawks says the .17 hmr is affected less by wind than the 22 magnum. I would guess there are other factors as well. The bc of each round. Might be the case as with the .30-06 and the 270. The .30-06 is superior up to 300 yards but then after that the 270 has the slight evergy advantage due to maintaining velocity better.

Part of it will depend upon the distance you shoot.  If you are shooting long range, the heavier slower bullet will drift less because of the higher BC.  But as close range a much faster lighter bullet may drift less.

At long range the lighter bullets start slowing down faster than the heavier bullet.  So now they are lighter and going slower so the wind has even more affect.

If that were the case then how would you explain the .30-06/270 question.

Not a ballistic chart comparison but I have seen the chart once before. .270 smaller and lighter with more energy down range than the heavier .30-06 bullet. .30-06 bullet slows down faster.

I am talking same caliber.  Of course with a smaller caliber you gain a higher BC because the same or lighter weight bullet is longer or at least equal too the larger cal.  As reference take a 168 .30 cal Amax bullet compared to a 7mm 162 amax.  The 7mm has a much higher BC so it will be more efficient at all distances.  But take a 178 .30 amax vs a 155 .30 cal amax and the higher bc of the 178 will perform better at distance.

Is this scenario of the original post we were talking same caliber.  Changing calibers will absolutely changes things.

I always figured it is easier to account for drop than wind. The 110 is a boat tail and the 85 is flat based if I recall.
