Going to be purchasing a new whitetail rifle in the very near future and was looking for a caliber that I haven't owned....looking for something a little different and that has led me to the 7mm-08.
The rifle will be used for whitetail with shots well under 300yds. Do any of you have any experience with this caliber?
Enlighten me.

Little recoil and it rocks. I have shot a few and hunted with a few and thats a good cal. A friend of mine swears you don't need any other cal than a 7mm-08.

Talked a guy I use to work with who was looking for a rifle for his wife into buying a 7mm-08 in the Remington 788 Carbine when they first came out. He kept it for himself.
Also have friend who has had a M7 in 7mm-08 for longer than I've known her. She won't even try anything else.

They are suppose to be very mild with recoil and still hit hard. Similar recoil to a 243 I believe. I'm only going by what I've heard though, I havent' shot a 7mm-08 so i couldnt' say for sure. |

I have a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm-08 that my father-in-law gave me and it is a great little rifle, very accurate for factory rifle. It is my go to deer rifle. I think you will be pleased with it.

My wife uses a 7mm-08 in a Ruger compact. It's a deadly combo. GREAT CHOICE.

I also have a 7 -08 in a Sako Finnlight, its my favorite Bolt Gun and I have some nice rifles....I would use it for anything in the US except Brown Bear. It makes a nice Elk Rifle regardless of what some say, with todays bullets (Barnes TTSX & Nosler Accubond and Some of the Hornady Bullets like the GMX amongst others....I would not hesitate shooting a Elk out to 300 yards, maybe a tad futher. In some loads it has better ballistics than a 308 and you can load a 154 grain Hornady SST up to a velocity of 2900 FPS. Its actually the same round as the 7x57mm Mauser and performs better or as well than the old 6.5x55 Swede which has been used for animals all over the world.. yep, its a hell of a round IMO anyway...
I would say recoil out a rifle is a more then the 243, probably a little more then a 260 also. Its the same as 284, less then a 25-06 I would say...Hope this helps!!

I have a Weatherby lightweight sporter in 7mm-08 and love it. It has one drawback, and that is when you take it to the range it is difficult to stop shooting. I always feel bummed when my ammo runs out. Mine is very accurate and extremely comfortable to shoot. It has plenty of power for any deer out to 300 yards. Two thumbs up. I agree with JF4545's recoil assessment, depending on rifle weight and stock fit of course. My 7mm-08 in the light Weatherby is slightly more comfortable to shoot than a friends 6.5x55 Husqvarna target rifle, which surprised me, but it is close. You could also consider the .260 Rem, 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser, and 7x57 Mauser and have very similar performance, as stated above for "something different." On paper with full performance handloads, both 7mm's mentioned have somewhat more power on target than the .260/6.5mm until you reach 300 yards or so. Then the 6.5's begin to pull away. 300 yards is a long ways that said.

There are some really good reasons mentioned to try a 7mm-08. One that has been mentioned is the better ballistics performance for bullet weight vs. .308. For example, a 7mm 162 gr. Hornady A-max has a much better BC than the closest .308 versions (33% better than the .308 168 gr. Amax). You may only be interested in shooting out to 300 yards but that's still going to provide a flatter shooting bullet even if loaded to the same velocity...and you could load it significantly lower, resulting in less recoil, for the same velocity.

Ummm ...
The 7-08 rocks! I bought a Rem Model 7 in 7-08 for my son the day he was born. He's still too young to use it, but I've been knockin' stuff dead with it ever since! I load the Barnes 140 TTSX to 2850 in it. I shot a mulie at 235 yards this past season with a nice, clean one-shot kill. My only concern is that I will eventually have to let my son use it. Maybe I'll just get another. |

Here in Upstate NY close to the Canadian boarder the 7mm-08 is extremely popular for White Tail and Black Bear hunting and being this far north both critters are usually large.

7mm-08 is an excellent round. Only thing I can add for a rifle is to say don't get it in a Browning BLR lever action rifle.
My wife has a BLR in 7mm-08 and the best group it will do is about 3" at 100yds.

One of my pig poppers is a savage 110 in 7-08, and It is light recoiling, supremely accurate, and just plain devastating on whitetail and hog. You wont be disappointed with the 7-08!!

I've killed several ~150 pound hogs with my cheapie Marlin XS7 7mm-08. Head shots on almost all of them and they dropped straight to the ground. The two I shot behind the shoulder didn't get much farther - maybe 10 yards each.
I absolutely love the 7mm-08. It's one of my all-time favorite rounds. The ONLY downside is that sometimes it's more difficult to find ammo than the more "common" calibers, but if you plan in advance and/or shop online then you shouldn't have any trouble there. Recoil is similar to a .243 but it hits like a .308 - what's not to like? |

I have a CVA Optima Elite in 7mm-08, recoil is light, but mine hates the 140gr bullets for some reason. I hand load for it and it is extreemly accurate with handloads. The reason I mention this is because that is the main bullet weight you are going to find in factory loads.

I've wanted a 7mm-08 since I was about 12 years old, and I just picked one up on gunbroker. Should be a proud X-Bolt owner soon. Hello and goodbye tax return, all at once.

7mm-08 will be my next rifle. I plan on it being a hand-me-down to my son for his first hunting rifle. I have never shot one or even handled one, but all of the good things that I have heard about them take away any hesitations.

I wouldnt hesitate to buy another 7mm08, was stupid to get rid of mine in the first place. My experience is it is a very accurate calibre.

Buddy has one and it's a excellent round. Some of the claims I read about it on the internet are a bit overblown but that doesn't diminish it's overall usefulness as a good all around medium game cartridge. It would certainly be on my short list of considerations if I didn't have 4-5 medium game cartridges already.
