Wankle engines for wankers

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

RX-8 is a nice car, but keep in mind that it requires a LOT of shifting. There is no low-end torque to speak of. The handling is absolutely world-class though.
Fuel economy is pretty crappy, but the reliability is decent (a friend of mine had it for a couple of years). It does burn oil, so you'll need to add some regularly. ILya

Wankels are mechanically simple, with much fewer parts count than a piston engine. Mazda is one of the few manufacturers making wankels anymore and they are by far the largest wankel manufacturer, so they've perfected the design. The only issues I've ever heard of these engines is the apex seals may need to be replaced every now and then, and they aren't very fuel efficient. They aren't very fuel efficient because unlike a typical 4 stroke engine, the intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust cycles happen on every revolution of the crankshaft. They don't have a lot of low end torque but they're high revving, so they get their peak horsepower at a higher rpm. Since they are much lighter than any piston driven engine of equivalent hp, they provide a more balanced cg, which contributes to the excellent handling of the car.

What do you run in your lightning? My 'charged Chevy will NOT accept anything lower than 92 octane.

My Subaru is highly rated in safety, requires little maintenance, gets 25-30 mpg depending on town/highway and my right foot, has 4 doors, gets around fine in anything short of deep snow/mud, handles well, runs mid 12's in the quarter, and has plenty of headroom for me at 6'4".
They recommend premium gas for their turbo models, but I stopped paying attention to gas prices a long time ago. I have to pay whatever they charge anyway- so why bother worrying? You can run lower octane and the car will compensate by pulling timing, but it will obviously make a bit less power too. I got tuned for 93 and just stick with it. With bigger injectors and proper tuning you can use e85 without any problems in a Subaru fuel system and make quite a decent amount more power. On the STI models you can make 400 lb/ft to the wheels with just exhaust, injectors, an $80 fuel pump, and a good tune for e85. E85 doesn't do quite as well on mileage though. I think it's in the 20-25% mpg reduction range. Edited by jason miller - March/08/2011 at 02:02 |

The RX8 placed a close second behind Porsche in the GrandAm Rolex Series GT class last year. They were solid in every race I saw.
The steering wheel paddle shifting is a great option that will make going through the gears no problemo. Paddles make high rev engines a lot easier to deal with than floor mounted sticks.

They're nice cars to drive and ride in but as some have said the cost over other cars in similar class is a bit much imo. Takes 91 or higher octane and with gas going right back to $4 a gallon, not sure it's a great buy lol.
