Right now I'm using Burris Signature Zee rings in medium height. I currently have a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 mounted on it and it works perfectly. I ordered a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 from SWFA and I'm wondering if it will fit in these rings or if I'm going to need to go with high rings? I figure if it was a 42mm scope it would fit no questions, but I'm not sure how much the Adjustable Objective adds to the size. I know the Center Point 4-16x40 I tested had a bit ao and it didn't want to fit in medium rings. So that made me wonder about this one. I'm just trying to figure out if I need to order a set of high rings, or if I can use these.

Here are a few pictures of what it looks like now with the 40mm Prostaff.

Just for reference on how much clearance there is, I tried to slide a pencil between the bottom of the scope and the barrel, and it wouldn't fit.

There's a good chance you'll need higher rings.  I had a Vari-XIII 3.5-10x40AO that measured,if I remember correctly,52mm od.  You also need to take into consideration whether or not you'll be putting a lense cover on the objective end.

Yeah I may have to go with a set of highs. I'm not planning to run a lens cover though.

That being said, does anyone have one of these scopes they could measure the objective end of?

I don't have the scope but specs at Burris' web site shows 56mmO.D.

Seems like I probably will need higher rings then. I couldn't find that info on their site, so thanks for it.

Do you guys think it's safe to go with a set of high rings, or am I likely to need extra high ones?

I'd wait for the scope to come, than you'll be able to make a bitter decision.

+1!  There are so many choices in scope mounting products that I'm sure you'll be able to get your scope mounted at the height you want it.

I guess that's what I'm going to do. The only reason I was hoping to get some now, was the only local place I know that sells these rings is about an hour away and I was going to be over that way for other stuff tomorrow. So I was hoping to pick up a set while there, but the scope isn't coming until Thursday. Maybe I will just wait until Thursday and just go this weekend and pick up a set.

Only problem there is that your limiting your mounting product options to what that store sells.  You can use your current mounts to get an idea of how much higher you'd need to go by laying the scope in the rings and shimming it until you get the height you want.  Then measure that height.  Ask the guys at SWFA what will work and have them sent to your home.

My bet is you can keep the mediums.

Yeah, I know I want the Burris Signature Zee rings though as I've just fallen in love with them. I may wait and order them from SWFA too, but I'm not sure if I want to wait that long for them to come in. So it looks like either my mediums I have now or the highs are what I'm going to have to go with. I'm going to wait until I get the scope and see what it looks like in these rings and see what I need to do then.

One option would be if you must go ahead and pick up a set of highs as long as they will let you return them unopened if you don't need them.  Then once you have the scope if the mediums work carry the highs back next trip that way.

looking at you picture you may have too but I have the pentax version on my stevens 200 and I just used the medium height cheapo weaver quad loc rings and they work just fine. The objective looks a bit beefier than the 3-9x40 I have but in reality there isn't that much difference I don't believe. I'll try and measure the outside diam. when I get home tonite and post it for you. I do know I have a set of reg zee rings in the high style and they are pretty high as I use them onmy stevens 308. I'm betting you will be fine with the mediums.

From published dimensions your Nikon has a diameter of 48mm and the Burris has a diameter of 56mm. So with out the lens caps your new scope will need 4mm of more distance between the barrel and the bottom of the scope objective than for your current set up. 4mm is about .16inches. You will also need some more distance so you have a gap between the objective and the barrel. You would not want them touching.

How much clearance do I need to have between the scope and the barrel?

I measured my pentax 4.5x14 and came up with a diameter of 2.224" vs 1.835 for my 40mm leupold and 1.89 for a 40 mm pentax. My leupold in medium zee rings has a barrel clearance of right at a quarter of an inch Sparky is pretty much on the money with his measurements so I believe you will have around .09" or somewhere between 2mm-3mm in clearance. Tight but it should be workable at least wait to see how you like it.

Thanks guys. I guess I'm just going to have to wait and see how it looks when it gets here.

How much clearance do I need to have? If I can slide a dollar bill in between the scope and the barrel is that enough, or do I need more?
