I won a Savage Axis (.243) at a Whitetails Unlimited event and now need optics.  Gonna be probably used for coyotes and a deer rifle for my wife.  I now its just a basic no frills gun but I do expect it to shoot pretty good, all my Savages have.  Kinda of a truck gun that takes a beating. Is it time for SS 3x9 or maybe more magnification? Im in the $400-500 budget range and have opportunities to shoot out to 500 yards. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

SS3-9 is a fantastic choice for that rifle.  I'm not a big fan of the 3-9 range, but I really like the SS.  It would go well on a .243... outstanding combo, I think.

Congratulations on the win, BTW...

The SS 3-9 would be a great scope, I really like mine.  If using it for yotes, i wouldn't go higher than 3X on the low end. and 9X is plenty for a hunting rig out to 500

If you plan to dial in correction you are on the right track. If however it is a truck gun like you mentioned I will suggest that I put one of these on a Savage .243 and found it a good match.

No flies on either option there. I'm thinking free gun with $170 scope makes a regret free truck gun. Thunbs Up
