In the not so distant past, I've been to 13 gun shops within a small radius of my house. Of those, only one was semi-decent, another was just o.k., but the rest were just plain crappy... (crap inventories...new and used, unhelpful and almost stupid employees and some even rude ones too). What's up with that?

Yesterday was the straw that broke the camel's back. I found a new, promising place. After detailing what I was looking for (to the owner not a zit faced kid at the counter) he said I've got EXACTLY what you are looking for. One of my stated criteria (to him) was that I wanted a CRF. Well, this douche' brings out a Browing A- Bolt and hands it to me. I said no thanks this is not what I was seeking....not to mention it's a push feed. He then proceeds to argue that fact with me, and implies that I am mistaken. Well, I set him straight, thanked him for his time and left. I won't be going back there for anything...ever.

Anybody out there have similar dealings? It's no wonder online sales have jumped. At least a person can find exactly what he wants without having some pencil dick try to push some "inventory" off on you. Geez Louise. I do feel better venting though. LOL.

I haven't had that situation with gun shops (we only have a hand full) but did with archery pro shops when everyone and their mother was getting into the business.  Guess you just need to keep looking.  Any ranges you can go to and ask the locals there about a decent shop?
What are you looking for by the way?

Local gun shop is not bad.  Have 10+/- employees that work there.  1/3 are almost too easy going.  Will b/s with you for hours but do know what they are talking about.  1/3 are hard chargers.  Pure high pressure sales.  Last 1/3 are in the middle.  Will talk but not overly chatty.   Can choose who I talk to depending on my mood.  Scopes there are a different world.  Leupold is great, 2nd only to Night Force and there is nothing beyond that.

I have a few reliable favorites, but yes most are run down and almost embarrassing.

I went to this shop because he was listed as a Kimber dealer. One of the two on my list was the Talkeetna....375 H&H. Just because! LOL.

Actually he finally said he quit selling Kimber's because they are a PIA to deal with. However, he also said he was mostly carrying handguns and didn't know much about their long guns. Ya think? LOL.

I lucked out here in Pennsylvania with the gun store that I found.  A bunch of great guys.  I would say that most of them are pistol guys.  John ( the owner ) knows all guns.  Very knowledgable and easy going and not a chest pounder!!    Laugh

I think all of those fellers are also into all of the black rifles and ARs and stuff, too.  I don't know anything about ARs............ I am always somewhere else, prowling around through the debrís of trade-ins!!    Bucky

We also had a fantastic gun store in Hutchinson, Kansas.....The Shooter's Supply.  FANTASTIC.  They were closed on Mondays.  I used to tell the girls that we were never going to go to Hutchinson on a Monday.  Laugh

This is no kidding... I went into a pawn shop outside Guntersville... They had a "special rifle" (big sign in the store)... the barrel had been spray painted with chrome paint... pits so deep they were highlighted by the paint.  Most gosh awful thing I've ever seen.  $549.00.  It was horrid.  I've had nightmares ever since...

sh*t, I'm not sure we have 13 in our whole state!  (I'm not counting WalMarts and the like)  I'd never get my Honey-Do-List parred down!

We have 3 pretty good ones here in Omaha.  As in most places, some sales staffs are better than others.  Two are "big" stores and one is a Local owned smallish shop.  The local one used to be the only show in town and they acted like it to.  Since the big boys moved in, they have gotten much better in the customer service area!
take em!

We have several here, a couple of big chain stores and some small shops. One of the small shops has very little in it that anyone would want so I have no idea how he stays in business probably just recieving guns people buy on line. One of the shops has pretty good inventory for a small shop but the guy who runs it is so doom and gloom negative that most people are turned off by him. The knowledge level varies greatly at all of the stores there are a couple guys at each of the chain stores who are fairly knowledgable mixed in with a hand full of guys who dont have a clue. So it's always hit and miss.  People have different special areas they either know or are clueless about. Probably the most dangerous one I remember was the salesman in C abelas bargain cave trying to sell a blackpowder pistol to a guy trying to tell him how to load it when he obviously had no knowledge of it and I stepped in and explained the correct loading  so the guy wouldn't get hurt.

I'll usually buy powder, primers and bullets locally, and have bought two rifles here - one of which is great and that I still own (a Remington LTR from their custom shop). But mostly there's never anything interesting or for a good price. Almost all the parts, reloading and maintenance equipment I have were bought online. Granted, there's little market for some of that stuff...like how many people own an angle indicator and mount? But even when I made an attempt to buy a Rem. 5R locally, the three shops I checked with either had never heard of it or just didn't care to go to the effort to get one. I bought it through SWFA instead and the service was - as usual - excellent.
Reaction time is a factor...

I feel ya, Ric! Everybody is getting into the gun game to make a buck. Very FEW decent gun shops are still around here.
One of the last old school gun shops in my area got bought out about a year ago by some dudes and it lost all it's charm the day the original owner walked out the front door for the last time.

You could always go to a gun show and buy your, ya know.  Big Grin

I like the ones where you want to look at a particular rifl and ask can I see that ruger 77 there.
Clerk "This one"?
Me " No the ruger 77,
Clerk this one?
Me no that's a pump shotgun, it's that bolt rifle 5th from the end,
Clerk" This one"?
Me" No that's a lever action"
Clerk" This one?'
Me "never mind".

I also Like the ones where you go in and everybody is just standing around doing nothing and when you ask to see a used rifle you can't see through the bore for the dirt. If you make a comment the response is well we've been pretty busy.

Just be glad you guys aren't in Houston, everyone down here is asking about $200-$300 over what you can purchase guns for shiped on line. I mean I could under $50 or $100 even, but man these guys are crazy.

I guess I'm lucky. The only for a long time gun shop is owned by friends of the family so i know all them. I have always played games with the new guys working the counter just to see if they knew there stuff or not. A few did and a bunch didn't. I walked in a few years ago and meesed with a guy whom I had not seen before and started in on him. Well he started in on me and it was a sh*t fest from there on out. long story short I have worked in his gun shop for over 3 years now. I have bought a few rifle from this store and if they didn't have it in stock it was ALWAYS there the next day no questions asked and it was what I was after. the prices are always good but now better i'm working for the guy who now runs the gun department. So there are still some hometown gun shops around just not to many.

My favorite first question to someone at a gun counter who look like a donkey or looks like its there first day on the job. "Hey  dude , Do you have any of those ruger700 22LR with a left handed twist in?" and just sit back and watch....
