I know nothing about optics and I mean nothing. This forum has a wealth of knowledge being shared by the members, the best I have come across so far. Within a couple of evenings of reading past posts I am feeling more comfortable in selecting a scope for my first hunting rifle. I may not buy the best scope or the most expensive scope but, I hope to buy a scope that best suits my needs and budget. I like the warranty on the vortex viper, I can see myself my breaking it. It will be on a browning x bolt 30 06 which will be used for everything (not alot of disposable income for many guns) from deer, moose, caribou, bear. MY one question, is the 3-9x40 the best size choice for an all around scope? The deer could be close or could be far away, anyone have a good choice for an ammunition choice? 150 or 165 grain? brand? Thanx in advance. Allan Cullen

If you can afford to go to $400, I would recommend the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x. It will be a better otpically and if this is your one do it all gun, having a little better glass will be nice. But if not Vortex makes a decent optic with the Viper and it will serve you well I am sure.
I think 3-9x is a great power range for your intended uses as is the 30-06 http://swfa.com/Zeiss-3-9x40-Conquest-Rifle-Scope-P608.aspx Edited by supertool73 - February/23/2011 at 14:28 |

Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

Welcome to the OT, Allen.
I would echo Supertool's advice, adding that a 2-7 or 4-12 would also be good all around magnification range. There aren't a lot of disappointed Conquest owners, and there is no better scope at $400. I would look at a "hard" expanding load in the 30-06 for game from deer to moose. Barnes 150 TSX comes to mind, and it turns the 30-06 into a flat shooter. Other options would be Accubonds in either 150 or 165, Interbond, Trophy Bonded, etc. A premium bullet pays big dividends when hunting the really big stuff like moose. |

I was thinking $500 would be my limit. I am still open to suggestions. I considered vortex because it is a Canadian company and I am Canadian. However I have since learned the scopes are not made in Canada so that throws that out the door. If I trashed a Vortex scope I am under the impression it would be fixed no questions asked>>I'll look into Zeiss Conquest, thanx

Actually, even though they have a Canadian division, the company is based in Middleton, Wisconsin.

30-06 topped with a 3-9X40 Conquest - what I got my oldest Son, got his younger brother a .270 topped with same scope. Can't go wrong with that combo!

Well, considering your budget and your admittance of not knowing much about optics, I would also recommend the Ziess. The Vortex would be good too. And I doubt you will break it. Scopes of that quality can really take a beating. I torture test mine and then put them on a horse in the mountains elk hunting. Had them rolled on, and no scopes broken yet.
Also, stick around and read more. You will learn a lot from the good people here that know about scope. I know I learn a lot from them every day.

Welcome Allan! You have received great advice so far. Another consideration would be a Sightron Big Sky 3-9 X 42. These are also very good choices for typical hunting situations. Cost-wise, they are under $400, and have a $75 rebate going on now. They also have good CS.

You beat me to it! I was going to say the same thing...
I would have been on the Big Sky bandwagon like a fly on...well, you know, had the Elite 4200 not been on sale for SO cheap!
Good luck with your purchase. All of the scopes mentioned can get 'er done NO questions asked.

Mostly all I have is 3x9 scopes. It seems that there is always deals out there on them. I bought a spare 3x9x40 Burris awhile back from swfa for $119.95 new. also many 3x9's to fit your budget. alot of sales out there right now with the discontinuing of the Bushnells. the Conquest is hard to beat.
