I have a Tikka T3 Lite in a 7MM-08 caliber. I currently have a Bushnell Elite 4200 3X9X40 scope on it. I would like to get a scope with better low light capabilities. I have a buddy who has the Meostar that has a 56MM objective lens, but I'm not sure I want one that big. I kinda like the 50MM in the Meopro line.
What is the trade off with the Meopro line vs the Meostar line? I have also considered a Zeiss Conquest in a 50MM, but is is a little more money than the comparable Meopta. The $600 to $800 range is about all I'm willing to spend.
Any info will be appreciated.
Thanks

I believe the Meostar's have better glass than the Meopro's, but either would suffice. A 50 mm is as large as I'd go (42 mm is even better IMO)...56mm are huge. I'd also recommend that you check the samplelist...there are some good choices there.

MeoStar is 30mm, considered to be more the "tactical" line, MeoPro is 1", more "hunting" oriented. The MeoPro's are assembled in the US and I believe all parts are Euro. MeoStar is a pure Euro. Glass is the same, I believe, but the coatings seem to be different. The MeoStar, to my eyes, has slightly better low light performance. There is not a lot of difference, but MeoPro fades a little earlier... my eyes. I've never had my Conquest or Diavari at the range when Ken shows up, so I've not done a 1:1 comparison, but the Meopta's give the impression of very nearly equivalent glass to the Diavari and certainly equal to the Conquest.
I am not certain the MeoStar's are made any longer. Even the "new" ones are at least several years old (minimum 3), I think. My friend buys one whenever he gets a chance. He doesn't shoot a LOT, but is fairly active and has a Meostar on a 300WinMag (has been there for several years) and a Meopro on a 300WeatherbyMag (around two years, I think) and he brags about them all the time... backs it up with shooting performance, too. He goes on several high dollar hunts every year and always carries pictures of the elk and HUGE deer he kills. Last time I saw him he was going on a hunt to Canada to kill everything big enough to die... and if it wasn't big enough yet, wait on it to grow up. Koshkin has tested both, I think. Shout him out and he can probably give you more info than me. They are pretty reasonably priced and perform well. I've not known anyone who actually has one who has complained about it.

Both Meostar and MeoPro scopes are in production and in no danger of being cancelled (there were a couple of new Meostar designs at this year's SHOT).
They use the same coatings, but Meostar is a higher end design, that is better corrected and provides for better image quality. In my practice, image quality of MeoPro was similar to Conquest (tiny bit worse resolution, but wider field of view and superb contrast). Meostar is a bit better than Conquest to my eyes. MeoPro has slightly longer eyerelief than most (not all) Meostar models, but this is not going on a kicker so that likely does not matter. Neither MeoPro nor MeoStar for the time being have much tactical inclination. Both ar ehunting scope lines, although Meostar has a couple of models that are considered to be "Dual Use": 1-4x24 and 4-16x44. Anyhow, if you are willing to put up with a slightly larger objective lens, it is worth your while to check out the 3-10x50 Meostar with #4 reticle. ILya |

Unless I see Ken at the range, I don't get much info on the Meopta's, but he told me he had had trouble finding SN's that weren't older than his. Perhaps an artifact of being in Alabama...

A tikka, in 7-08 with an elite 4200 sounds like a pretty good combo to me as is! .... However, you could always sell me the 4200 to help fund the meostar

GUYS, thanks for all the replys. I see a couple of you like the Trijicon scopes. How do you think they compare to the Meopta and Zeiss scopes?

For those who have compared the 3X-10X-50MM Meostar R1 # 4 with the 3X-12X-56MM Meostar R1 # 4 Red Dot in the same low light conditions, does the 56MM deliver a gain in seeing/shooting time beyond the 50MM? If so, would you risk quantifying the increase as 1) "slight"---approximately 1-3 minutes, 2) "some"--- approximately 3-5 minutes, 3) "appreciable"---approximately 5-8 minutes or 4) "a great deal"---anything in the 10 minute range? |

My brother has the 3-10x50 Meostar on a RRA Predator. It has the 4A reticle and in my limited experience, it is an excellent scope. The 4A is great for low light and fast target acquisition.
Here is his set up with a sun shade. http://www.opticstalk.com/ar15-coyote-hunt_topic27156.html
He also has a 3-9x50 Conquest. I'll have him get on this thread because he also has a T3 in .243.

Does it look like this by any chance ? This rifle & scope make a great package... imo The 50mm glass seems to end up on all my true nighttime rigs for the maybe added benefits. I think with your choices mentioned, you will see a benefit even in the 40-44mm objective size. The 3-9x40 conquest comes to mind for your setup as being a real good match. If you want to spend a little more, the swarovski 3-10x42 z3 would also have to be nice on your t-3 and their discounted now... |
