Great shooting Dan.You are my insperation on how to get to the top I see I'm on the correct progression;First came the Rem 700 police in .223 with a Conquest 3.5-10x50 3yrs ago,now last year I'm into the 700 5R in .308 with the Victory FL 4-16x50,so if my figures are correct next year .338 &Hensoldt.

Well, I went coyote hunting today... kind of. Went to my friend's house after showering in antiscent, lining the front seat with plastic, washing the steering wheel with antiscent, clothes vapor soaked for weeks in oak scent, boots sprayed upon arrival with red fox pee, ghillie suit... you get the picture. I showed up and Pete was dressed in white cargo pants, tennis shoes... you get the picture. So, I said I was going to go ahead while he got ready... he said "I am ready, I just have to get my gun". I said, "I'm going to go on ahead... remember we need to NOT be seen getting to the hunting spot (Pete put out 10 dead chickens acquired from a chicken house two days in a row at my suggestion in a "prime" location). So, I start out low-crawl about 300 yards, in the ghillie, with my drag bag. Pete has been after me for almost a year to eliminate the coyotes around his house... I'm serious about this. I've ALMOST reached the hunting spot when up walks Pete, whistling, I think. Well, while I was in Iraq, Pete had hip replacement surgery, so I forgive him for walking up, silently, and start settling into my "hide" position on the edge of a terrace overlooking the "oasis" next to the pond where I told Pete to throw out the chickens. I open up my bag, take the FNH out (thank GOODNESS I did not go to the trouble of brining the .338) set up, rolling out the integrated shooting mat in my bag, putting on my thinskin shooting gloves... ready for coyotes. Suddenly, a sound like trees falling and I look over to see Pete shaking out a workout mat, bright blue, and he knocked over his shooting stick... as he finishes up, he yells over "Hey Dan, do you have an extra tripod, I think my sticks are too tall". I gave him my new, specially purchased, tripod and set up on my Harris bipod. Ready. A few minutes later, I hear "this isn't gonna work for me", so I throw Pete my 50lb backpack, that doubles as a shooting rest on a number of occasions, tell him(in a quiet, "hunting show" whisper) how to use it, give him a bottle of water and express the need for quiet and stillness. "Wait", I say, "they will come to these chickens... they ate the first batch". Quiet lasts for, oh, a minute... Pete rearranges his mat, checks the bolt to make sure he has a round loaded (after just loading it), you know, just settling in stuff. It gets quiet. I think I see a coyote at the far edge of the woods, about 300 yards away and let Pete know where it is. About two minutes later, he stands up and says... "I have to find a place to pee". I roll over on my back an look up at the sky... I'm not ready to go yet, but this hunt is pretty much over. After about 30 minutes, Pete walks back. It is almost dark now and he says... "It's too dark to shoot now". I say, "no, it's not, still plenty of light and I can even shoot after dark", determined to stay now until "the cows come home". It was well dark before I said it was time to leave. As we were "packing up", Pete said... "ya know, Dan... if we're going to get any coyotes, we're going to have to get serious about this."..
I dropped the mag and cycled the round out of the chamber and GINGERLY placed the rifle back in the drag bag, picked up all the paraphernalia and headed back to the truck. As we were nearing Pete's driveway, he said "do you think they heard us???". I said, "Nah, but you probably need to do something about "descenting" before we go out next time... Old Spice is NOT an attactant for coyotes." To my surprise, he agreed and asked what I use. We are supposed to go out again next weekend. I can hardly wait...

If I ever go coyote hunting with you, or Pete again, mental note to self... BRING THE .338, BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO NEED A LOT MORE RANGE THAN YOU CAN GET OUT OF A .308 "zombie gun"...

I've spent time in a lot of very ... uncomfortable, for lack of a better word, places (although probably not as many as you have), which makes me appreciate little comforts of civilized life quite a bit. ILya

The .338 can certainly assist in delivery of ensuring the "little comforts of civilized life". Ranges once thought of as difficult are now easy.

Dan, that was really funny. At least you have a good sense of humour.
Maybe you should send Pete to the store about 50 miles away for some beers just to keep him busy.

I have to tell you, Pete is probably the most brilliant person I have ever met. The epitome of the "mad scientist". He is much better in a lab... reminiscent of von Neumann.

Great story about Pete!
Reminds me of a friend that bothered me about taking him bowhunting for elk. He asked until I relented, and I told him we were going to "get serious" about it. I waited in the truck outside his house for 30 minutes, until he finally stumbled out. He threw a small fanny pack and his bow in the truck. I asked him where his water was. He said, "I brought a can of soda." I asked him about food, and he showed me a 4 ounce package of jerky. He then went on to show me his brand-new shiny hiking boots. I told him I would wait while he got the rest of his stuff, but he told me he was "good." I knew right then this would be our first and last hunt together. I called in two bulls that morning, but he didn't want to keep hunting after that. Guess what! He was hungry, thirsty, and had hamburger for feet. He ate most of my food, drank half of my water, and used all of my moleskin. He's a heck of a nice guy, but he told me my type of hunting wasn't for him. He was going to stick to treestands. |
