Well I finally got to order a new barrel for my Savage .300 WSM. I went with a McGowan Savage pre-fit: 26" length, Shilen#7 contour with a recessed target crown. Keeping it chambered for the same cartridge. Going to be like a brand new rifle!

I'm not sure if you've ever done a barrel swap on a savage before, but as a note of caution the thread sealer that seems to be used in odd intervals from the factory can be a real headache at times. Seems like some get the treatment and others not so much. So be prepared for that. Also how are you headspacing the barrel if I may inquire? Are you using just the common go/no go gauge? If you are using this rifle primarily as a hunting firearm you may want to consider going with a set-go variation. This is usually best accomplished by using a thin strip of scotch tape on the bottom of the go gauge. This allows the bolt and case to operate properly in "not so favorable" conditions. Generally this has little to no effect on accuracy. At least not enough to make a difference on a hunting weapon. If you plan on target shooting that is entirely a different matter. I'm sure you've thoroughly researched the barrel swap but I'll include a link for information for you or anyone else contemplating a savage re-barrel. http://www.switchbarrel.com/Savage%20FAQ.htm Another item you may not have considered and really isn't a make or break item is a new bolt head. The factory one works fine but SSS (sharp shooters supply) has a better one. I would recommend this if you're making a paper puncher. And finally I'm curious as to what ammo are you going to run? Handloads/factory? bullet weight and grains etc. I'm only interested because the 1:10 twist may be just a little fast depending on what grain and load you plan to use. a 1:11 or a 1:12 may work better for you depending on your application. However I doubt the 1:10 will be a bust on any load that you use. It would also be cool to have "progression" pictures. Or take pictures as you go |

Shockey Thanks for the link and advise. I am using common go, no-go gauges from PTG. I still full-length re-size my cases, so having a tight chamber is actually one of the reasons for doing the swap.
I went with the 1 in 10, because I usually load 178gr. AMAX's and might be switch to an even heavier bullet since I will more barrel length over the factory to get the velocity I desire. I will try to get lots of pics. But I just ordered the barrel yesterday, so I have a 4to6 week period to pull out my already scarce hair.

Well tomorrow is the 4 week mark... still no new barrel. Called and checked on it today, and it is in "gunsmithing". I really can't wait... but I have to. It is probably a good thing that I haven't had a day off work since I ordered the dang thing or the waiting would have been horrible!

Billy,
How much flatter do you figure she'll shoot with the longer tube?

Welcome to my world
In the good ol' African country we work on African time...all come to those who wait. A new rifle takes anywhere from 6 months to two years, depending on how hard you fight.
Waiting for my scope for 5 months now !! (Allthough this wait can be blamed on the good ol US of A !!!)

Not much . At best he would gain 200ft/sec. over a 24 inch tube. That will give 1.5 inches at 300 yds.
I cut my barrel back to 24 inch and find the better handling makes up for lossed velocity. Edited by 8shots - March/09/2011 at 00:15 |

But I will also gain a bit from tighter chamber tolerances and the probable ability to a bit more powder... But only time and the chrony will tell !

Billy, just be careful with your start-up loads. A tighter chamber means LESS powder. The longer barrel will mean more powder is burnt before the bullet escapes the barrel giving the extra velocity.

Good call 8s, I dropped my .308 2 grains from 44 to 42 with my new tighter chamber when I re-barreled. |

This is how I set my headspace on my 6.5-.284 Norma build to keep brass fatigue to a minimum.
I first set my HS using a go gage and then the gage and .002" shim and basically followed all standard proceedure.
I loaded one new brass case with a starting load and fired it. Then I full length resized it in my die.
So I had case that was sized in my die, and completely reset the HS using it. And it did HS a little tighter than with the go gage. This results I feel in a HS that is custom fit to your personal die dimension.
I kinda figured this out on my own, does it make as much sense to you as it does to me?
I ran it by the guys on Savageshooter forum and said it should work fine and one member said that's the way he does it too.
Maybe not the best choice if you intend to shoot factory ammo, but I never will.
