I've used a 7x64 steyr luxus for over 30 years, and see some on gunbroker on occasion, if thats an option.

I've found a Mauser 98 and 2-Turkish, one built in 1937 and the other was a full rebuild off of a Turkish 98 (all in 280 Rem).  The '37 Turkish is really cheap.  I wouldn't have any idea if they're good deals or not, but they're in my price range (Turkish models).

If I wanted to rebarrel something to a 280 Rem, can I start with any kind of long action bolt in a 270 or 30.06...or is there more to it than that?

I've noticed that.  I found a couple of used Model 70's but they were push feed, which will work, but I was hoping to find a new CRF.  I might go with a Ruger...we'll see.  I'd love to find a sporterized Mauser.

why do you need a claw?? im just curious. people have gone to alaska and africa both for ages with push feeds and lived to tell about it.

I know.  I had in my head that I wanted a CRF, so that's what I'm looking for.  I've got a push feed Model 70 and it's a great shooter. If I can't find one, I'm good with a push feed.

I'd have no problem picking up a Browning...maybe even a TC Icon or Venture.

i had a .280 rem in the old ruger m77 style, i would be interested to try a new hawkeye in one. i would really rather have one in a browning abolt or a rem700 lss mountain rifle though.

I looked at Ruger's website and it didn't show they chambered anything in a 280 Rem.

the 7x64 predates the 280 about 25 yrs. I think there is a small difference in shoulder angle, but the rounds are interchangeable (at least in my guns). I use a set of RCBS 7mm express dies for loading both the 64 and the 280

Any long action will work. The value of the mausers depends alot on how much else has been done, how good the stock was etc. But one that has been done right is certainly worth the bucks

I guess so.
From what I've found for brand new...it's Browning X-Bolt, TC, and Remington.  There might be others.  They're definately tougher to find than a .308.

That's good to know.  That always gives me more options.

One of those Mausers I found looked like it was in great condition.  According to the description...new walnut stock (Monte Carlo), new trigger, barrel, the whole works.

Thanks Koshkin, that was what I understood too. Close but not considered to be interchangeable. As a matter of fact I was under the impression that one ( 7x64 IIRC)would chamber in the other (280) but that it was not necessairly true in reverse, however I may have that wrong as I have never had either one.

I like the TC's The stocks on the Ventures aren't the greatest.  The Icons are nice, but they're $300-$400 more.

I've heard the Remmy's have gone downhill quality-wise.  Any truth to that?

Maybe I'll take a look at 'em.  I checked out Reminton's website and they only had one model they chamber in 280 and it looked like it was discontinued it...which doesn't mean they're not out there.

You're right, they do.

I've found a couple Model 70's online (push feeds) I might keep my eye on.

Plus dad said I could have his reloading equipment...just need the dies (and the gun too I guess) Sharp Shooter
