Okay, now that I have my Tikka 30-06 sighted in I'm running with the bug and thinking maybe I should get a scope for the 22.  Before I continue, I want to extend all the thanks I can to Urimaginaryfrnd for his help with my Tikka.  I'll be posting my target just as soon as I can get a picture of it, but in the mean time let me say he was incredibly knowledgeable and I knew within five minutes of watching him work that what I was about to learn would have taken me weeks if I was going it on my own.  More on that when I post the target.

So, I had a guy tell me that the  22 wouldn't kill the coyote unless the round was well placed, but it would definitely put a little hurt on it and might keep him digging in the next field instead.  Anyone want to weigh in on that?

Next, I'm wondering what all is involved with mounting a scope on a 22 that doesn't currently have a place for rings (holes drilled or a rail), or if it's even possible.  Finally, what economical scope(s) should I keep my radar up for when the funds become available?

Now that I have my time in with Urimaginaryfrnd, I have a pretty good idea of sighting it in and am pumped to be one cog smarter than I was a couple of days ago.  I might never be a Jedi or god, but knowing one is a pretty awesome thing.

Great post man. This place is a gold mine of knowledge.

What type of .22 you got? Does it have the 3/8 dovetail grooves?

.22 LR is certainly capable of killing coyotes, but shot placement is critical.  I don't think you would want to shoot them at much over 100 yards with 40gr high velocity.  You should be pretty proficient before coyote hunting with a .22.  I spent some time shooting at 100 - 200 yards with my 10/22 a while back and got pretty comfortable with it.  I still don't think I would shoot much beyond 100 at a coyote.

Here's one for the gun buffs.  I inherited this from my Grandfather.  On the barrel is: Harrington & Richardson Arms, Model 550, 1610, "Pal", 22-8-L-LR.  Any info about it would be appreciated.

3/8 dovetail grooves?  You could have asked me if it has yellow eagle eyes and I still wouldn't have any idea what you were talking about.  That's why I'm a grasshopper!  Bucky Thank goodness they didn't have anything lower to describe incompetence.  However, even though I'm not a sniper, at 44 my eye doctor just told me most people my age would be happy to hear their eyes are good.  She described mine as good good.  So, even though I might have gotten a late start, at least my body isn't failing me - yet.

The H&R model 550 "pal" was only made from 1947-48 and is a fairly rare find indeed.
since you inherited it from your grandfather, that makes it extra special! I personally would not put a scope on it, but if you decide to, you would have to have it drilled and tapped as I'm not aware of any one making a " no gunsmithing " mount for them.

Looks like my old Remington model 550.

I'd just get a new .22LR rifle instead of butchering a fine old rifle like that...

I'd suggest something like a CZ452...(this is a Lux)

Or a Savage Mark II...(this is a BTVLSS)...

i couldnt see you drilling and tapping a gun like that.  I would have to agree with some others in saving and getting a newer 22 or even a 17hrm or 22 mag.  There are some savage deals at some box stores for great prices.

Coyotes are tuff critters.  You want something bigger than a .22.

Or at least more powerful, e.g. .223. I look at a .22 rimfire as potentially lethal and treat it like all firearms as far as safety is concerned. They will kill. My father-in-law shot at a buck last winter just trying to harass it off their property and found it a few days later. Coyotes may only be a few notches above ticks and mosquitos, but put them down humanely (instantaneously).

Thanks for the kind words. The guys have made a couple of good points first being that the 22 rifle should be looked at more as a family heirloom and the fact that it is a bit rare means one should not alter it in any manner because that harms its collectable value.  While I think the 30-06 is a bit heavy for coyotes it will put them down hard but with some fur loss.  If you are not saveing the fur the 30-06 would work for you just fine.  The 22 is acceptable only if you can shoot them in the brain at fairly close range so its not really acceptable.  There are coyote specific forums Preditormasters and coyotegods and they favor 17 Rem,  however 204 Ruger,  .223,  22-250,  243  are fine choices also.  The last one I shot was with a .308 so just use your 30-06 if you can hit them in the head you didnt ruin the fur anyway. When you get ready to buy another rifle buy yourself one of the above mentioned calibers probably in a stainless composite Tikka and then you need to spend some real money on the scope and get an illuminated Trijicon Accupoint to hunt them at night. This is an expensive hobby but its fun.   If you really decide you want to use a 22 you are better off to buy a new one because it will cost you almost as much to have a gunsmith drill and tap yours and custom fit a scope base to it, as it will to buy one that is already set up.

That U-friend fellow is a pretty nice guy.

I agree with the consensus on the .22LR.  While it will kill a 'yote, it's very marginal.  I would not choose it for a dedicated 'yote rifle, or for that matter, ANY rimfire.  Go with the likes of .204, .223, .22-250, etc. as acceptable minimums.

In a 22 a semi auto might be quick enough to place multiple hits where in a bolt action a 22 mag would be way better but still rather light. I've seen 22 mag take them down with one good hit but 22mag ammo cost as much per bullet as 7.62x39 for an AK 47 and for a few cents more one can shoot .223 which is ideal.

Around here you're only allowed to hunt coyotes with a rimfire or shotgun when on wildlife management areas. The 22mag is the best option in the rimfire class. I would suggest a Marlin 25m on the cheap paired up with the Vortex Viper 2-7 on clearance for $170. The Savage 22mag is another good option. You could do the Marlin setup for around $300 scope and all.

Blue, not sure where home is for you but have a good guess with your avatar pic.  If you get a .204, .223 or .22-250 you can also try the sport of shooting prairie dogs.  Caution-very addicting past time.  Any one of these three with take a yote nicely and are fairly economical to shoot as well and can pull double duty with p-dogs.

I'm with everyone else that say don't mess with the hierloom .22  It's a non-replaceable keepsake and the machine work to put a scope on it would cost as much or more than a new gun.

If you're just looking to move the coyotes along a .223 or .204 Ruger single shot would be a good choice, and topped with a decent scope should be plenty capable of good accuracy. The .223 would be easier on the wallet when you buy shells.

If God didn't want me to play with it, he'd of made my arms shorter.

Tman, yes, looks a lot like that one.

Put a scope on it - NEVER!  I had no idea what the story of this gun was other than I inherited it.  Definitely will keep it in as good of condition as possible.  Now I'm wondering if I should be insuring it as a rider.  Does anyone know what it's worth?

Finally, I'm a bit Native American when it comes to hunting.  There's something about giving thanks to that animal for giving its life for my meal.  That said, I'm not planning on eating any coyote but even so I don't believe they should suffer in their death either. So no .22 hunting for them.  As it was said, I'll look into one of the other suggestions when the time comes.  Maybe research them best as I can so I know a real deal when / if it comes along.

Thanks guys!  Now I'm thinking I need to put the other two guns out there and get some history on those as well.  Which forum should I be posting, or does it really matter?  I just don't want to make the scope forum into something it isn't, nor neglect  some good reading in one of the other forums by posting stuff here.

DANG!  THIS IS FUN!
