In the past, I've always defaulted to a 3-9x40mm or 2.5-10x40mm scope for all of my rifles regardless of caliber or purpose.

What are your opinions on high-end (Swarovski, VX-3, etc) type scopes in the 2-7x36mm range? Would these type of scopes be suitable for whitetail, muley and elk hunting? Would their twilight performance be acceptable in low-light conditions? To answer this last question, you need to have hunted with one.....not quote me an equation for figuring exit pupil.

I have no problem with scopes up to the 40-42mm range, but after that I don't care for the looks and they seem to have an adverse affect on the balance of most light weight hunting rifles I've handled. Please bear in mind this paragraph is just my opinion and purely subjective in nature.

Yes they work for what you are asking, and work well.  I have used them for mule deer and elk hunting.

I just replaced my 3-9X40 Conquest on my lightweight 7mm-08 with a Vortex Viper 2-7X32.  There just isn't that much difference between a 40mm and 32mm objective.

The little viper just looks right on that Remington Model 7.

I'm with you Matt, I like to match my scopes to my rifles. I like a more traditional look, a 50/56mm scope just doesn't look right on a 22" barreled gun the same way a 32mm scopes looks out of place on a 26" heavy barreled bean field rifle.

I use either a 1.25-4x24 or 3-9x40. For whitetail at longer ranges I like the 3-9. For thickets the 1.25-4. To cover a wide range of possibilities I choose the 3-9. There have been times that the deer were in the shadows at 200+ yards and the 4x made the shot more difficult. 3x is low enough for most close shots unless they happen quickly and are really close. Deer and elk don't give a squat how good the scope looks on the rifle. Balance is another matter though. There are plenty of feather weight 3-9x40 compact scopes. Minox ZA 3 and Trijicon to name a couple. I have the Trijicon on a Tikka T3 and the balance is fine. I find that I'm transitioning away from the 1.25-4 scopes in favor of the 3-9s on all but my stalking and hog rifles. IMHO! the 2-7x32 is a compromise. It's only 1x lower on the low side and you lose the 9x. I'm not much into tweener scopes for my uses.

I am a fan of Leupolds 2.5-8 ( have 2 on Encore BP's , a Rem 700 LVSF in308 ,and one on a Rem Model 7 in 308) ... I also have a couple Nikon Monarch 2-8's ( 7mm/08 compact 70 and a rem 7400 carbine ) 3200 Elite in 2x7's have served me well on 12 gauge slug guns and a New England 30/30 ..Matched to the right caliber , rifle, and hunting scenario-- shots typically close up & to 200yds or so , "tweener" scopes can be a good fit ...
