That is a complicated question. What is your budget? Intended target? Hunting? Target only? We need a few more details to find the best match.

this one only has 50 moa of internal adjustment but that should be plenty to get you to 500yds and the illumination is nice fiber optic plus tritium so no batteries.  It's shown with the included lens shade but you dont have to have that on to use it.  You either need to be able to dial in correction or use BDC marks for known hold over I prefer to dial in correction.

Not to be an ass, but is a BAR a 500 yard gun?

I have two BARs and can assure you they are both much better than "500 yard" guns.

Sorry to take it down a rabbit hole.  The only BARs I know in the real world are maybe 2-3MOA guns (or maybe the shooters are 2-3MOA shooters.)

I'd look at the 3-9SS or a Conquest (depending on weight limitations and how much magnification you want.

No rabbit holes... 30-06 has BOSS, which is one of the best "precision improvement" tools a rifle can have.  Wish I could get BOSS on all my rifles...

My .243 does not have BOSS and is very accurate for a 3 round group(under MOA, sometimes way under)... 5 rounds opens up to about 1.5MOA (without cooling time).  A 3-9SS or 2.5-10 Zeiss would be excellent choices.

The one I've had certainly was not. Seems like the 2-3" groups at 100 yards are about normal for these guns, but it seems like occasionally people get ones that shoot better.

My 30-06 is and I had a .243 that shot well also!

One thing that does needs improvement is the trigger!  I know where mine breaks, so on the bench not a big deal.
take em!

If this is for big game hunting, you really do not need a whole lot of magnification for a 500yard shot.  What you do need is a reliable way to either hold over with the reticle or dial the elevation with turrets.

I have a simple 280Rem boltgun, that is exceedingly accurate, so despite it being just a run of the mill rifle, I like to practice shooting at plates out to 600 yards with it.

The scope I have on it is a Variable Super Sniper 3-9x42.  Although the magnification is not very high, the glass is very good and FFP reticle allows both easy holding over without regard for magnification setting, and ranging.  Knobs also work superbly well.
