    Posted: January/22/2011 at 03:20

I just finished watching an all night elk hunting marathon on the Outdoor Channel and it seemed that most of the hunters used a 300 Ultra Mag. Since the recoil for the 300 Ultra is about the same as a 338 Win Mag and many would argue the 338 is a more versatile cartridge, why do you think so many choose the 300 Ultra as their all around big game caliber instead of the 338, am I missing something?

Because it has the word "Ultra" in its name, and that sounds cool.

I don't think the elk will know the difference if the elk is hit with either the 300 Ultra Mag or the 338 Win.
The 300 Weatherby or Ultra mag are like peas in a pod. I think that the 338 shoves rather  than  the sharper, faster recoil of the 300 magnums. The 338 is impressive with 225 grains bullets, but so are the 300's with 180 grains. Both are excellent elk calibers.

Look at who sponsored the hunt and paid the cost of filming it probably a company that sells - you guessed it the 300 Ultra mag.  Lots of calibers have been introduced and for the most part the reason for introducing new calibers is to encourage people to buy new rifles in those calibers, certainly not because they added caliber was able to do something never before done.  There is very little difference in the actual effectiveness of most large caliber high power rifles when it comes to killing game with a well placed shot.  An elk shot with a .243 through the heart will die just as dead as one shot with a 300 Ultra Mag.  Some calibers designed for dangerous game have enough energy and a heavy enough bullet to get the penetration needed on dangerous game but most guys cant ever afford those type hunts and for deer to elk size game there are a lot of calibers that will work especially with the quality of ammo available today.  I would sure rather have a .338  win  mag than a 300 ultra mag and I really like .375 H&H

I just won a Winchester in .338 on gun broker.  Pics later.

I had a 300 ultra but sold it to a buddy. I liked the rifle but I wasnt in love with it.

Based on his needs my bother chose a .300RUM and he really likes it; he's been hunting with it on and off for almost ten years now. He has a lot of specialized rifles so I don't think he was going for the most versatile big game round available at the time when he made his choice but instead a long range, flat trajectory, heavy hitter. Someone else's needs and concerns may lean toward a .338 Win.

Any one that wants a 338 should have one! It's  good caliber to have and shoot. You never know when the cape buffalo might move into a guy's corn field and need to be controlled!!Big GrinWink

Pyro, can you post that picture of your Remington .264 with the Nikon Monarch on it?  I was looking for that awhile back, and couldn't find it.
