I would like to know if anyone can tell me the difference besides the fact the one of them is a short mag, as in which one would kick harder using the same 180 grain ammo?

To me the difference in perceived recoil between the two is dependent on the weight of the rifle, the heavier one will kick less.

correct, i have a .300win mag in a browning abolt, it has a 26" barrel and is a joy to shoot. i had a .300 wsm in the same abolt, but the barrel was a few inches short and was probably 1-2lbs lighter and it kicked like a mule. i got rid of it. my .300wby isnt that bad compared to that abolt.

The 300 WSMs I have shot had a slightly sharper kick too them, where my 300 WM is more of a thump.  Neither are that bad I thought.

To me there are really too many variables involved to determine which cartridge would produce more kick.  BUT I would guess if in some way you could have two EXACT rifles set up the same, one in each chambering, and shot them blindfolded you'd be hard pressed to tell a diff.

The difference between the two cartridges besides the obvious COAL differences is that the WSM is based off the .404 Jeffery parent case, which doesn't have a belt, while the .300 Win mag's parent case was the .300 H&H, which is belted.  Ballistically, the two are virtually identical, and neither has any advantage over the other in that regard.  The "advantage" the .300WSM provides is it produces .300 Win mag velocities and energy in a short action with a shorter barrel, resulting in an overall shorter and lighter rifle.  The other advantage is the .300WSM requires about 5 gr. less powder, on average, to produce the same velocities.  So, theoretically, the .300WSM should provide marginally less recoil because of the lower ejecta mass, but that is largely offset by the fact a short action, shorter barreled rifle usually weighs less.  So, I doubt you'd notice any difference in recoil at all in rifles of the same stock design, unless there were significant weight differences.

The other "advantage" is the short/ fat case has a shorter powder column and theoretically provides more efficient powder combustion, theoretically resulting in lower velocity ES and better precision.  This is the guiding principle behind cartridges like the 6PPC and 6BR, used for benchrest comp.  I say "theoretically" because the difference, if it really exists, probably isn't discernable in a typical factory hunting rifle.

If one already had a .300 Win Mag, the very slight "advantages" the .300WSM offers wouldn't justify buying one, in my mind (unless you just wanted another rifle).  If you don't reload, .300 Win Mag ammo is less expensive and more widely available as well.  But, if one wanted a .300 mag class rifle and does reload, I think the .300WSM makes good sense.

Very well stated Ted! I love my short mag, but due to the price of ammo, it led to the purchase of a reloader. If recoil is a concern, buy a .308 win.
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?
