Hello everyone,
I'm new on this site and had a few questions that weren't being answered else where. I will be going elk and whitetail hunting this year in Montana and the guy who owns the property says that he has seen plenty of nice deer but there all way out there. He has had shot opportunity on elk from 100 but some all the way out too 600 yards. I want a scope that will help me out here. I will get a long range reticle, but also want to dial incase i have the time to dial. I would like to keep it under a 1000 dollars if thats possible. So far the majority of people have directed me to the Leupold VX-3 with CDS and Boone and Crocket reticle or the Vortex Viper PST. I was wondering what everyones thoughts and opinions were on the VIPER PST? and what else you have have to suggest to me? |

First off, it would help if you mentioned what caliber you are shooting and is this a stalk or stand hunting situation. I personally like a light weight and compact scope for hunting. If I was in your situation I would probably check out the Minox ZA5 and Zeiss Conquest series of scopes.

I would take a serious look at the Minox ZA5 3-15x50, 4-20x50 BDC reticle or the slightly heavier in weight and length Zeiss conquest 4.5-14x44or50 rapid Z reticle. Try to handle a few in person and see what you like.

i read on another post that the glass is better on the vortex then the minox, and i know for a fact that it has fantastic customer service and does the minox track well. cause i have read many great reviews on the pst viper for long range shooting

I'm sure others will chime in but with my eyes the glass in the PST is close but not on the same level as the Zeiss conquest or Minox. The PST's are very new and the only time I spent with them was at their facility in Middleton WI. I do own a Vortex viper 3-9x40 and while the glass is good, it was replaced with a zeiss conquest for night coyote hunting. From the limited reviews on the web and my experience, the glass in the PST looks similar to the viper's. As for tracking, I have had no issues with any of my scopes except a vortex crossfire mounted on a 12 gauge slug gun. Vortex customer service took care of me on the spot when I stopped in their place and replaced that scope.

The Conquest in a 4.5-14x44 with Rapid-Z 800 would fit that nicely. Then you can send it to Zeiss, have target knobs installed, and have Kenton Industries make you a custom tuned BDC turret as well. You could quickly dial range, or even faster, use the reticle.
Here is a Kenton turret in the LR Hunter format.

I've not yet seen a PST, so I can't comment on those. Personally I would take this Zeiss setup over the Leupy though. I have the scope, just don't have Kentons on it yet.

if i was spending between $600-900 the Vortex Viper PST and the Zeiss Conquest would probably be my main contenders. take a look at both, thats no chump change.

The PST would be a good choice for you. No, it won't have better glass than the Conquest or Minox, but it does offer great turrets, accurate and reliable tracking, lots of travel, excellent reticle in the FFP. You can't have everything in that price range and these things are more likely to make or break a long shot on game than glass quality (and this is coming from somebody who loves good glass).
The 4-16 FFP Mil/Mil I used last season (and now the replacement with the upgraded turrets) leaves little to be desired for your application. |
