I just ordered a rifle that I've been wanting for quite a while. It's a Ruger No. 1 International in 7x57. This is going to be a deer hunting rifle for East Tennessee. I'll be using it for a mix of still hunting and stand hunting in and around thick cover. I'm looking for a good scope under $400 that will keep the rifle as light and maneuverable as possible and provide good low light performance. I hunt public land exclusively in that area and most of my opportunities occur around sunrise and sundown. I am currently looking at the VX3 1.5-5x20 with Heavy Duplex reticle, but I've never owned a scope with such a small objective lens and I'm wondering how it will do in low light. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Congrats on what sounds like a nice rifle. The scope you ask about - while a quick acquisition scope - will not perform well in low light with the straight tube objective.
For low light performance, I never go below a 40mm objective. Others on this site may have better ideas on a scope that suits your needs.
If lighter weight is an issue, look at some of the 4 and 6 fixed power scopes.

I agree the 20mm objective is not very good for low light conditions, a 4x32 would be nice and I also agree with Pyro's suggestions for a variable scope.

I just saw the Burris 1.5-6x40 Euro Diamond with #4 reticle listed on special for $300. It seems like that would be perfect for my needs, but they appear to be gone.
I'll take a look at the 1.75-6x32 VX3 and the 2-7x32 Viper. |

I also think that would be a great option, maybe the best. A few guys here have also bought this scope and I've heard nothing but stellar reviews so far. It's also a hell of a bargin.

I got one of the 1.5-6x Burris. I was just out playing with it tonight in the low light and dark. It had a good image, I think it is going to be a dandy little scope.

like mentioned above, I would go with the 1.5-6 burris or the 2-7 viper. |

Keep in mind the scoping Ruger #1's oftentimes require some careful thought processes. Long eye relief scopes, extension type rings or long-tubed models may be necessary. Been there, done that.

if you need extended eye relief perhaps a Trijicon 1.25-4 or a Bushnell 6500 1.25-8
I got one of the latter in for review the other day and was an idiot, didn't check the eye relief specs it's 5", just never crossed my mind |

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've got a Viper 2-7x32 on a muzzleloader. bNb's post has me a little nervous, so I think I'm going to take the Viper off the muzzleloader and see how well it mates to the Ruger No. 1. Then I'll decide whether to get another Viper or try something else like the VX3 1.75-6x32. However, it's hard to justify the Leupold when I could get 2 Vipers and still have $50 left over.

I have had a couple of rugers and I might point out that the front ramp is fairly tall and will most likely show up in the scope if you go much below 2x. This always bothered me but YMMV. The little viper as well as the leupold s mentioned would both be pretty nice but I might point out that there is a conquest 1.8-5x33 on the sample list for $319 that would be a pretty nice scope for you. It might be a bit heavier than the others but I would think it would still be a reasonable scope for your little rifle.

If you can find one the bushnell 4200 1.5-6x42 has rainguard & firefly reticle. I have one it's super but the Burris eurodiamond 1.5-6 with illumination is my favoritie. I also have the Viper 2-7 and you would not be satisfied. The only benifit of Vortex MAY be customer service, which I hope to never use, and I can tell you the coustomer service for both Bushnell and Burris is almost non existant and what remains is incompetent. This is one reason S&B et. al. cost so dearly.

Why are you saying I would not be satisfied with the Viper 2-7? |

Vermin the Viper is discussed at some lenght in the Thread on the comparison "leupold vxr & viper" read and enjoy. To answer your question I would choose something else. Too much head eye movement to get sight picture when fast aqusition is critical for the hunter.
