I got into my wife's car yesterday morning and as I was pulling out of the garage there was a terrible rattling from the interior fan and it smelled faintly of dog food. I asked her if she had noticed and she said it had been like that for a couple days. "So why didn't you tell me sooner?" Anyway, it turns out to not be that hard to get at a Subaru fan. Six screws hold the glove box assembly in place and three hold the fan in. After I cleaned it all out, I moved the dog food inside the house but now we'll have to get a cat.
