OK. I'm confused on this. I realize there is an exit pupil advantage in a larger objective. What about resolving small objects when light is not an issue? In theory the larger objective should refract light better allowing for a sharper image. I'm referring to angular resolution or spatial resolution. How does the Dawes Limit apply to rifle scopes? Or does it?

You will get better resolution with a larger objective but to see much difference you would probably need to go from small to huge. Zeiss has some whoppers
Zeiss 6-24x72 Tactical Hensoldt Telescopic 34mm Sight Illuminated Mil-Dot Zeiss 6-24x72 Tactical Hensoldt Telescopic 34mm Sight
Stock # - ZEI3302960000
  • Matte
  • Illuminated Mil-Dot
  • 34mm
  • Target Knobs
  • Side Focus
  • 0.1 MRAD
$3,769.95
Will you see enough difference between a 44 and a 50 to justify the extra cost probably not but if price is no object buy the big one.

It most certainly applies to riflescopes, except there are a few "footnotes" that need to be taken into account.

If you have two scopes with IDENTICAL optical quality and magnification, the one with the larger objective lens will resolve better.

If your eye can resolve DOWN TO SUCH SMALL FEATURES, you will see a difference.

If these two conditions are satisfied, then the rule applies.

Any time.

Generally, if you want me to look at a particular thread, just send me a PM with a link.  Sometimes, I am out of touch for a little bit.
