Has he used a scope before? If not, maybe a red dot of some sort. I put one on my 7yr old grandson's .22 when I saw he was having a problem using a scope. Boy was shooting the tacks that held the target in no time!

That is a full sized gun with a good reputation for accuracy. The Leupold 3-9 EFR is a great rimfire scope that will suit it well.
It has an AO which will allow precise shooting from 7-200 yds. The glass is pretty good and the scope looks good on top of a rifle. That inspires confidence, too. http://swfa.com/Leupold-3-9x33-VX-II-Ultralight-EFR-Riflescope-P3278.aspx |

What ya planned for him to use the rifle for? It might indeed be too heavy to tote all day squirrel hunting, but if it's to get good at bench shooting at targets, it's perfect.

I have a Burris FFII on my 17hmr and really like it. Works great for my shooting. Some people like AO for close stuff, but i have never had a problem.

I have a Burris FFII Ballistic Plex reticle in 4.5-14x42. It works great and the tic marks line up with Hornady 17 gr ammo.

I would think that your grandson would be much better served with a scope like the SWFA Super Sniper 10X42.
The SS10X42 would allow your grandson to learn the fundamentals of milling, as opposed to bypassing this opportunity with the over-simplified BDC reticle. The SS10X42 will not break the bank and can be moved up the rifle food chain as your grandson grows into more powerful rifles. |
