I have a 17 Rem that I need to buy a scope for and I was wondering how this one would fare?
I plan on using this gun as my night calling predator gun so a scope that works in low light conditions is a must. Burris 3-12x56 Euro Diamond 30mm Rifle Scope$399.95 http://swfa.com/Burris-3-12x56-Euro-Diamond-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P5962.aspxI'm tired of buying poorer quality scopes so If you think I can get another scope that is a better scope for the money I'm all ears. iim a predator hunter as well...my night time set up consists of the elusive wildlife hunter light in green and my leupold vx2 3-9x40
make sure you get a scope with a heavy reticle, i have a duplex and while i have no problem targeting in, i would like a heavier reticle (such as a heavy duplex or german #4). im sure the burris is a great choice, but for me, id rather have a minox or leupold for that price. a vx2 is more than fine for night hunting, i have a vx2 in 3-9. why 56mm? your eyes arent gonna be able to see the "light transmission" that a 56mm scope gives you over a 40mm scope. even with the exit pupil being bigger, hows your eyesight? your only gonna be able to see what your eye pupil can process no matter how big the exit pupil is. being a predator hunter as well i never have an issue with shooting from weird angles because of how you set up with the wind direction so moving your head at an angle and having the scope turn black has never been an issue for me. like i said i do more than fine with a vx2. if i could do it over i woulda got a heavier reticle. check out minox as well...im in ny and shooting at 200 yards is 4x duty for me with yotes. i would suggest the minox za5, leupold vx3, ior or zeiss conquest...but thats just me |

VX2 for night hunting? That is the first of have heard anyone claiming that as a good choice. My FX2 sucks during the day and in low light. Can't imagine using it in the dark.
The larger objective will allow him to see better because he will be able to turn up the mag more than with a 40mm. Just ask the night time hog hunters that use the Trijicon 1-4x24 and 3-9x40 and 2.5-10x56. They all say the 56mm make a noticable difference over the other two. If larger objective sizes were just all smoke and mirrors I think people would have caught on by now. |

keep in mind i use an elussive wildlife light...so my need for the huge objective lens isnt needed....
without a light, ive never had an issue. believe it or not. like supertool said check with the night hog hunters as well. i dont think he'd steer you wrong. ill use a 50mm lens at night, but 56 seems real big. check with the general consensus and go with it. i might be the one oddball in the bunch

I use a 3.5-10x50 Leupold EFR for night time predator hunting. It is no problem when using artificial light like a Surefire. Without a light, no way.
A 1.5-6x40 Euro Diamond arrived at my door today. The price is outstanding on my unit. The price on the 3-12x56 is likewise outstanding and a fine choice. The Burris is very good glass and solidly in 4200, Monarch and VX3 territory IMO. That scope would be excellent for you purposes. Welcome to O.T. Edited by tahqua - December/24/2010 at 13:02 |

I would have picked one of the reduced priced Burris's with a 50mm obj but they seem to have been sold, at least the one's with a recital that I like. I don't have to be in a hurry though and I'm willing to save up and spend $800 to $1000. My biggest problem is that I also need to scope a 300 wby, 257 wby and Savage predator hunter in 22-250 besides the 17 Remmy.

It looks like the illuminated might still be available http://swfa.com/Burris-3-12x56-Euro-Diamond-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P5963.aspx

That would be Awesome depending on the size of the dot. I'm sure this gun will get some use as a wood chuck gun as my grand kids get old enough to go with me and I'm afraid the dot would cover to much of the target at longer ranges.

This would be an excellent choice if you are will to spend that much. http://swfa.com/Meopta-3-10x50-Meostar-R1-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P8005.aspx
Meopta glass is very nice. I have a step down discontinued Meopta and have it on my 7mm BAR. I have always really liked the image quality. One of the best scope I have in that department. Mine works well in low light while elk hunting in the morn and evening. |

The illuminated #4 in the 50mm sold out but in the 56 mm is still available in both illuminated and non illuminated models. I ordered one of the 50mm which is not illuminated but it has the balistic reticle and the only real difference would be over 7 power the 56mm would be a tad brighter. I think these are a very solid sturdy scope. There are several other scopes in the series that have illuminated reticles and if night hunting is the main thing it is wanted for one of the illuminated models would be best. typically the lower power scopes are more useful at night. I would say spend the extra $50 bucks and get the illuminated model of 56mm objective

Sightron Big Sky scopes have really nice glass as well. Probably not quite as good as the Meopta, but as good as 4200, VX3 and similar. Comparing mine to my 4200, I think it is a tad better personally. But they are not the same config so not a perfect comparison.

My brother has the same R1 on a RRA Predator. It is an excellent low light scope. It is also $250 more. I would like to see them side by side and compare what $250 gets. The illumination can really cover some ground. Lesser glass + illumination vs. better glass + 4A, interesting.
Coyote95 is my brothers post. The R1 is his favorite scope. http://opticstalk.com/lets-see-your-ars_topic24073_post330034.html?KW=#330034 Edited by tahqua - December/24/2010 at 13:50 |

if i had to do it over,my night time rigs would have some type of illuminated reticles. quality optics will give you the advantage you need as far as the brightness of the reticle. trijicon and aimpoint come to mind...

I do a lot of hog hunting at all hours of the day and well into the night and have several scopes that excel at that task. I consider an illuminated reticle to be almost a requirement for this type of hunting. Without getting into the uber-$ scopes, I would rank the Trijicon Accupoint series as the best value:$ scopes made for low light hunting. The 3-9X40 Accupoint is fantastic and works perfectly for the task as long as you keep magnification at 6X and below. This is all the magnification you need for the shot distances I typically encounter when hog hunting, which is almost always under 200 yds and more often than not under 100 yds. Even then, it would have to be a pretty bright moonlit night to be able to reliably make out details through your scope that far. If you plan to use more than 6X or you want to dial up more detail, the 2.5-10X56 Accupoint will undoubtedly work better, but I don't care for the tradeoff in extra size, higher mounting height, more widely variable eye relief, and price of this scope over the 3-9X40 Accupoint.
