I am thinking about changing some stocks around on some remington 700s. I was wondering how important it is to torque them back together with a torque wrench. I don't have one. Can I just snug them up good and be ok? If not is there a standard torque setting for these rifles or does it depend on the stock?

Most hunting rigs will be ok with just torquing them to snug, precision guns you will want to get a torque wrench and torque to specs.

problem is that if you get them to tight or to loose accuracy will suffer.

Another reason to have a good torque wrench is that you will get the same setting each time you retighten the screws, which will help with repeatability. I have never had a change of zero after removing an action and using a torque wrench to put the screws back in. I have a Seekonk, but would really recommend the Borka driver because it will allow you to use one small wrench for several torque settings, from rings to action screws.

I have 2 rem 700's both with HS stocks[5R & a police]The recormended torque is 45"lbs.Now being you don't have a torque wrench, hand tighten the 2 bolts then give them a 40-50% turn of one revolution BUT DON'T EXCEED a 1/2 turn.these are all recommendations I got direct from Remington.
If you have a different stock from the HS call remington,I believe most other stocks need around 65"lbs.Hope this helped!

Thanks guys, I changed them out today and took them to the pasture and shot 9 rounds through each and I can't tell a bit of difference in how they are shooting. Both are still grouping about half an inch at a 100 and thats good enough for me. One is a HS precision stock and the other is a Houge, but there does'nt seem to be any problem with either so far. I went to the gun shop today and asked my gunsmith and he said the same thing you guys did and if there was a problem he would fix me up, for a small fee of course, ha ha. Thanks again for the good advice I get from you guys.

Just make sure you wind it back past 0 when you've finished with it...its takes the pressure off the internals.

Worth every penny, cannot tell you the number of "straight from the factory" rifles I have seen whose actions were not torqued from the factory. It would have saved me loads of difficulty if some of the previous owners of some of my second hand rifles had had one, stripped scope mounting screws, ring screws, action screws etc. |

I have practically the same two rifles (but one is an LTR). I called H-S once because before I owned a torque wrench I stripped a screw head. Without hesitation, they sent me a new set of action screws even though the stocks came with the Remingtons. I asked what torque wrench I should get and was told 65 in-lbs. That has worked well for me but I'm sure that one can get by with less. The key is consistency. |

I have not took it out of the pack as I still have a few 1,000 miles to go before I can truly use it and want to keep it in the same pack. I'll do a test after first of the year and let you know how it works out.
