Ok guys I'm new here and need some help. Wanting to try a low power scope for whitetail deer hunting not sure what to go with. I hunt in Pa. in very wooded areas. Was thinking something like 1.5 x 6 x ? (36, 38, 40, 42, 44) I would like something decently clear, bright, with a large field of view and under $200.00. Before everyone starts laughing is there anything that meets those guidelines ? This will be mounted on a 30/30 336 marlin and also a tikka whitetail hunter deluxe 30-06 from time to time. All shots are less than 200 yards. Thanks for any info.

Let me be the first of many to recommend the Vortex Viper 2-7x32, on close out sale for $169.  For that price, nothing really comes close.  I use mine on a .308 Sako in heavy woods.  The 2x gives me enough low power for a quick shot in cover, the 7x is plenty out to 200yds (for me that's a real far shot).

+1, that is a great scope for the money.

http://www.opticstalk.com/major-savings-on-discontinued-close-out-burris_topic26571.html
There are several soon to be discontinued Burris scopes at an incredible savings. The soon to be discontinued Viper 2-7x32 is also a fine choice I have one of them and like it. Dont have one of these Burris scopes yet but I have two of their pistol scopes that have been tough. I really like the 2-7 power  range for hunting  but a 1.5 to 6 is about the same thing.  You are on the right track. Honestly even a fixed 6 x 42  is an awesome choice for a hunting scope, that is what I hunted with today.   I can get onto something pretty close even at 6 power.

With a price limit of under $200 you will not find anything close to the Vortex 2-7.

I have the Burris timberline 3-9x32 on a 336 30/30 and the vortex viper 2-7x32 on a 336 .35 remington.
I like both of them alot. I dont think you can go wrong with either one of these two.

The only other scope I can think of would be:
I think the Viper is a bit more scope.

  WELCOME to OT,nighthawk.

I'll add a vote for the Viper.  I've got one and LIKE IT ALOT.  Also orderd one for a guy who doesn't seem too energized to come and get it so I may just keep it myself.  Yippee  If you want one you'd better act quick as I don't believe thre are many left ANYWHERE.

UIF pretty much mirrors my thoughts in post #4. The fullfield 3x9 for $119 is a real deal IMHO and you could about get one for each of your rifles for not much more than your budget.

Vortex Viper 2-7x32 (I like the C3 reticle) or Nitrex TR One 1.5-5x32 if you want something a little smaller and lower cost.  Both are in your price range and are great values.  I have the Vortex on a Savage 10ML and the Nitrex on a Marlin 336 and I like them both.

At this time I have a ziess conquest 3 x 9 x 40 on the tikka. The ziess has a field of view of 34 ft at 100 yards on  3 power and I would really like something with a lot more. The areas I hunt it is really hard for me to get a shot off at deer running in the wooded areas. I have considered the following scopes.

swift premier  1.5 x 4.5 x 32 field of view @ 100 yards is  71 ft  $199.95   LT 96%   ER 3 inches
swift premier 2 x 7 x 40         "      "     "      "   "      "      "  60 ft  $199.95   LT 96%   ER 3 inches
truglo maxus XLE 1.5 x 6 x 44 "      "     "      "   "      "      "  57 ft  $99.95   LT ?   ER 5 inches
burris euro diamond 1.5 x 6 x 40 "      "     "   "     "     "   60 ft  $299.95  LT ? ER 4inches  30mm Tube
vortex viper 2 x 7 x 32   "    "      "       "        "        "        47 ft  $169.95   LT 95%   ER 4 inches
nikon monarch gold 1.5 x 6 x 42 "   "    "   "    "    " 64 ft  $500.00   LT 95%   ER 4 inches  30mm Tube

This is at the lowest power settings. I'm not sure if I want to go with a 30mm tube scope or not. I have thought about putting a set of mounts on both the tikka and the marlin and just switching the scope from one gun to the other, is this something that would be possible ? how does the burris and nikon compare ? Will I be happy with one of these scopes mounted on my gun instead of the ziess conquest ?

30mm will give you more adjustment, not sure if you're really even gonna need it though.  it will also require another ring set, although it only makes sense to keep a set of rings for each scope, so you aren't screwing them on and off constantly.

Well not sure at this time but was thinking I might be able to just put a set of rings on the burris /nikon and leave a set of bases on both the tikka and the marlin 336 and switch the scope back and forth or is this a no go ? also the burris/nikon are out of my price range at this time unless I would sell the ziess. Wich I'm not sure if that a good choice since I have never used a low powered scope. I was thinking with a larger field of view it would be easier to get on a runnning deer in the woods.

You can switch your scope around but it would of course require readjusting/sighting in each time. Therefore one rifle would not be set up to go if needed.

I live and hunt in WV so I'm familiar with the conditions you deal with.  To date,I've not found a reticle faster for target aquisition than the Vortex C3 in the 2-7x32 Viper.  And although your specs show it as having the smallest fov of the ones listed I've not had a problem because of the 4" of e/r and noncritical head position.  Sell your Conquest?!?!?!  I wouldn't.

I recently purchased the Vortex 2-7x32.  It was originally intended for my Browning BAR in 30-06 but will end of living on my Marlin Guide Gun.

I originally had the Guide Gun set up for a scout scope set up, but can't get comfortable with the Nikon Encore 2.5-8x28.

Low end on the Vortex is ideal for both eyes open fast shooting in the woods and the 7x magnification is more than enough to take it to 200 yards.

Thanks cheaptrick.  Been lurking and learning for awhile but finally decided to chime in from the cheap seats.  Kudos to the folks that participate on this forum.  This is probably the most comprehensive Optics forum that I have come across that isn't stovepiped in to a particular discipline (tactical, long range hunting...etc).
