I think ive narrowed it down to these twobut still uncertain.Any other recommondation would be usefull. Im new to rifle hunting not new to hunting or shooting have a 300 rum i hunt in ohio where rifle hunting is not allowed. My dads buddy owns a farm in ky where its legal.Going to hunt there next year anyway which of these would be better torn between ffp and sfp.Sound like i would like ffp better.Max yds would probably be 600 at most.

The PST is not yet available.
I'd get the SS, it has a track record and will be OK with the recoil a RUM generates.

I am in a very similar situation. My Mark 4 6.5-20 is just a bit too much magnification for my 300 RUM. I am looking at the 4-16 PST and I also considered the FFP/SFP issue. I won't use the reticle for ranging, so I am looking at the SFP model, given the crosshairs stay "big" in the lower magnification range. I see this being an advantage in low light hunting situations. I will be cranked up to max magnification if using the reticle for wind or drops at long range.
I am anxiously waiting for ILya's impressions of the PST. If the scope isn't all I hope it is, a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 will be topping my 300 RUM. |

It sounds like the PST should be available soon ... and may be worth the wait.

Also have new models of the SS coming out soon, plus waiting the PSTs....seems if stuck on these 2 waiting a bit might be the best option.

I like vortex but SS's will always get my money, Chris has put to much into them and stands behind them enough for me to send him my money |

I have two of the 3-9 Super Snipers on 300 Win Mag rifles they work well for that.

The 2.5-10 PST is SFP, BTW. I wouldn't worry about an FFP reticle getting smaller. While it's true that the subtensions become harder to see and the crosshairs thinner, all the FFP reticles I've seen have thicker bars that come into view as you zoom out, acting much like a duplex reticle:

Nice graphics Jon! For those worried about it, I did a fair amount of brush hunting in the thick stuff in low light to dark conditions with the PST 4-16 FFP on 4X. The reticle works fantastically for that use. It’s thick enough to be “OK” by itself but with the illumination it becomes excellent—far better than any non-illuminated scope, FFP or SFP. So anybody worried about that can just stop.
Back to the OP--for you I'd recommend the 3-9 SS. Mainly because I haven't seen the new 2.5-10 PST yet but have used the SS extensively and know it'll get the job done. While I like higher powers and parallax adjustment for really long range stuff, being new to rifle hunting the 3-9 will do everything you should be doing extremely well. It's dirt simple to use, durable, good glass, etc. |

For future reference, here are some pics of the 4-16X FFP Mil/Mil PST on 4X in very low light:

I wouldn't say that. The 3-9 SS and PST 4-16X on 9X are very close in optical quality.

Everyone's eyes are different. Some of them have looked through the scopes in question. Some haven't.
The SS 3-9 is a completely different scope than the old 20X you had and has much better glass. I'm pretty sure you've been told that many times, I'm not sure why it hasn't sunk in yet. |

The 3-9 SS is a very good scope for hunting. I have found the glass to be very good and the reticle very usable in low light. Especially when increasing the magnification up around 5X.
The tactical knobs proved to be reliable when dragging my rifle through the brush. The knobs did not lose zero. |

ultramag, have you used one? Also the 3-9 SS has different optics than the previous fixed power versions. It is a fine hunting scope and I have hunted quite a bit with one.
Your argument, so far, hasn't shown a whole lot of thought. Just short and negative quips about others opinions. Please present something positive in your favor. http://opticstalk.com/swfa-scope-scale-discussion-thread-2009_topic16515_page1.html?KW=Scope+Scale+2009 |

How can you say that?? The 3-9 and the 10x HD are not on the list. |
