I've started load development for my new .243 (that I haven't posted pictures of yet....Bucky)

Shooting 95gr. Berger VLD's. I tried 3 different powders today, and all shot pretty fair, and all groups looked similar at the same velocity level. Today I tried IMR 4350, H-1000, and IMR 4831.

40.5gr. 4350 group looked scattered, but I also forgot to shoot fouling shots after I cleaned so I threw that group out. It was slow at 2700 fps any way.

41.0 gr. shot a .547 group with 2 in 1 hole, and 1 just under them @2830fps

41.5gr. shot a 1.017 group with all three strung vertically @ 2925fps

H-1000 46gr. shot a .143 group leaving just an oblong hole @2730 fps

47 gr. shot a .824 group strung horizontally @ 2800

48 gr. shot a .637 triangle shaped group at 2950 fps

4831 41.5 gr. shot a .657 group with 2 in one hole, and one just under it @ 2730 fps

42.0 gr. shot a .869 group strung vertically at 2830 fps

42.5 gr. shot a .998 triangle shaped group @ 2950 fps

It seemed odd to me that with 3 different powders, all loads that came out at the same velocity shot nearly identical looking groups. The loads about 2700-2750 were tight, or 2 in 1 hole, and the other very close. The 2800-2830 loads all strung horizontally, and the 2950 loads all were triangular. I saw no real pressure signs in any of them. Is there a remote chance that if I pushed up the H-1000 or 4350 loads up a little bit that the groups would go back down to the size of the 2700-2750 load group size? Or should I try to stay with the 2950 fps loads, and play with seating depth, and try to get the group size down that way? I was looking to get 3000-3050 out of them, but I would sacrifice the 100 fps for a smaller group. I like the .143 group, but the 2700 fps is a bit slow.  What is the next step you guys would take. I've done nothing with seating depths yet. The bergers won't touch the lands and fit in the mag, so I loaded them to mag length.

shot the 41 gr or the 48gr load and be happy, is what i would do, or shoot faster burning powders like varget, h-100v, 4895 rl15 etc and see what happens.

I've got room to get more speed out of them, I just didn't know if it would help. Worst group I shot today was about MOA. I'm thinking I could take the h-1000 up .5 gr. and maybe 1 gr. and see if it tightens them up. And maybe the 4350 too. I have no real pressure signs yet, and have room in the case to do so.

Here, now you can look at the groups too.

Trigger,  I try to get to the velocity I want and then start messing with seating depth.  If that don't get you were you want to be you can always fall back to the H-1000 46gr load and live with .143" groups.

I really like the 46.0 H-1000 group, but can't bring myself to load them at 2700 fps.

Try Hybrid 100 or 414/760 I think you'll be surprized, but that velocity is way off for 1000 and 46 gr. should be around 2900 fps.

That would make sense to me as around 2730ish might be one of the accuracy nodes where bullet is going to sleep.  A bullet will typically have several different nodes were certain velocities they will shoot better because of the harmonics of the barrel.

What about trying the 105-gr VLD? Maybe it will like the heavier bullet more and if you aren't really seeing pressure signs, you could try to boost that one up into the 2750-2850 fps range. It would be less susceptible to wind so if you could get good groups with no vertical stringing that might be worth it.

Well, I pushed them up some. I took the H-100 up to 49 gr., and the 4350 up to 43.0
Here are the groups. I'm thinking about going with 42.5 of the 4350, as it looks like any higher or lower than that velocity wise would still shoot pretty good. What you think?

H-1000 The bullet on the right of the second target is not from this load.

IMR-4350

I thought about trying the 105 VLD's but they recommend a 1-8" twist, and I have a 1-9 1/8". I don't know that they would stabilize...... and these shoot so well.Big Grin

Have you thought about trying different powders?  Maybe IMR 4831 or RL-17.  Those according to the books I have should push a 95 gr bullet faster than the 4350

I started off loading the 85 gr Barnes and I have yet to get a good group however with the 100 gr Winchester factory power max its deadly.  Savage stainless .243.

I tried the 4831, and got similar speeds, but never did see pressure. Groups weren't quite as good, but if I upped the charge a bit, they might come down.

The powermax ammo didn't group very well at all for me. About 1.5" at best. Same with Win. Powerpoints.

For now, I'm pretty happy with the 4350 load coming out at 2980.

did you try imr7828?? in my nosler manual it pushes the 100gr stuff the fastest of any of their loads in the book. try 45.5gr of it (max published load and also the most accurate load in the powder) they started at 41.5gr then show 43.5gr in the middle.

These two would be a good place to start adjusting seating depth. Then if it gets a little tighter start working up again slowly.

200 fps will give you about 50 yds additional yards as far as energy withing reasonable hunting ranges. And would still stay within normal hunting ranges to be equally as effective. I would take the 1/2 in group over the 1 inch group and loose the 200 fps.

Looking at load data I would say your sweet spot would be somewhere in the 2800 range for that weight of bullet, 2750 is not that far off.

I would def try varget just because it has been my go to powder in the past.

Your best vertical spread and velocity is the h100o at 49.5 I would work on that one.
The 4350 looks to be at the 42.0 or lower.

I like the looks of that load too, but these were shot at 25 degrees, and need to be safe at 70-80 degrees as well. I'm not so sure they will be. I wonder how temp sensitive H-1000 really is. I figured if I load the 42.5 of 4350, I should have a fairly stable load at any temp........ But I'm kinda new to the whole reloading thing.
