Is there a major difference in the two cartridges, and would either of them be a good elk hunting rifle that will be using factory ammo like these.

Both excellent cartridges. The 7-08 with a 140 grain "hard" bullet is a flat-shooting elk killer.

The Barnes bullets and Nosler partitions in either will kill elk.

both great calibers... I personally would not hesitate to carry either on an elk hunt. |

It amazes me that a 7-08 is an ok elk cartridge with 140 gr. bullets, but to many a .270 is "light" even with 150gr bullets..............odd.
I agree though, either will kill elk.

Close the bolt and I doubt you nor the elk would notice the difference. trigger 29 has a point as both would rate as what many people would consider on the light end of elk cartridges, but to me it sort of like the 243 on deer It's considered light for deer but 1000's are taken each year. Not a elk hunter here and if that was my main quarry I might go for a bigger rifle but from the elk I have seen if I ever get that once or twice in a lifetime chance to hunt elk and I had a 308 or 7mm08 I certainly wouldn't hesitate to tackle one with it.

308 is about1/2 the price to shoot unless you reload. On the other hand, 7mm-08 has less recoil. Both will do the job. There is data on cartridge price and availability here.

I say get one of both! They are both great cartridges. That gives you an excuse to buy 2 rifles instead of 1.

I also agree, should, since I own both. My father has hunted with a Winchester 100 in 308 forever so I bought a 308 and then a 7mm-08. If you don't reload, the 7mm-08 can get pricey. Before I started to reload I would shoot Pivi Partisan 140 grain soft points as a cheap range round. You can usually find them for less than $15/box.

My dad hunts elk with a .243. Has killed every elk he ever shot at with it.

Well your dad clearly doesn't know what he's doing.
There are some 7mm bullets available that if I was considering a new rifle I'd seriously consider a 7mm-08. The ballistics are really good. But you'd probably have to handload to take advantage of that. A .308 is just fine for elk and is a great deer and antelope cartridge. And as others have mentioned, ammo availability and prices are much better. As you can see from info like this: http://www.6mmbr.com/7mm284.html#7mm08 7mm-08 is a better round than .308 win but do you really need that much improvement? One thing that discourages me from it (and I'm only speaking for my particular situation) is that I really like using Lapua brass. Since they don't make 7mm-08 I'd either have to neck down or substitute Winchester brass. Also, I load only for .308 and .30-06 so I'm able to streamline bullet and powder selections and dies. |

Personally I would go with the .308.
If you were to load both with 150 grain bullets, you could get more velocity out of the .308 because the bullet is shorter so it will take up less case capacity. Really you will gain 100 to 200 fps over the 7mm-08 because of that. Really the 7mm will only out do the .308 in other areas in long range shooting. That is where the higher BC may come into play. But for hunting distances it won't make any noticeable difference. The .308 will make a slightly (very slightly) larger hole int he animal as it will have a larger front. Plus the .308 allows you more options for bullets and bullet weights. THen as Jono said you have all the better factory options and the better reloading components available. For me it is pretty obvious, the .308 is a better hunting round in every respect. |

This one is kinda funny, my heart tells me to recommend the 308 for the reasons stated by Jason. But my head has also seen a lot of Elk taken with 243's. If you put the bullet in the boiler room, I have not seen many animals get up and cuss about being shot with "enough" gun.

I just read an article in one of the gun rags about the .300 win being minimal for elk, with the .338 being a better choice........... Yeah, right..... A .300 Win mag, is plenty of gun imo.
