How about getting one of these for deer and elk hunting, you can even get them with a 5 round magazine and a collapsible stock.

That 18 in barrel is going to minimize velocity, and subsequently range.  You will already lose some velocity in the semi-automatic action.  They are also heavier than typical bolt guns.

My main hunting rifle weighs that much unloaded, but that's including the scope, mount and bipod. Sounds like it's just too heavy and, I dunno, just looks to militia for hunting.

my .375 weighs a pound more than that, and i would take it elk hunting. the .375 has a lot more punch than the .308 though too.
