As the title states, I need a scope for a Rem 700 5R .308 for bench shooting and target, out to 1000 yds on very rare moments, for Pig hunting. You might have seen my other about which Bushnell Elite 6500 to choose from but I need some experienced opinions, have looked at Falcon, Vortex,SS etc. Thanks in advance, Jim

Welcome to the OT!
Take a look at the SWFA SS 3-9 + a good set of rings. The glass is very good, turrets are excellent & it will meet your requirements for 1k shooting.
I really like my 5r,can't say enough good things about it,keep us posted on how it works out for you!

1000 yds and pig hunting are at the opposite ends of the magnification range. For Pig hunting you need something that you can use in low light like a Trijicon or a heavy duplex or #4 that stands out in low light. For ultra long range you probably want at least 10x possibly higher but the higher you go the worse it is in low light. I tend to like the 5-20x50 Trijicon with green mildot but it only has 50 moa of internal adjustment so its more like a 600 to 700 yd rifle scope. |

Budget of $650?
Tactical Scope? Occasional 1000k shooting? Some hog hunting? Stickbow is right ... sounds like a perfect match for the SS3-9. |

Look at the Weaver Tactical 3-15x50mm or 4-20x50mm Mil-Dot FFP. Great glass and huge eye relief.

Those Weavers crack me up. They did everything right, great power range, good glass, FFP, Mildot reticle. Then they go and put MOA adjustments in them.

I have been doing it for years. I do not see the huge advantage. Less math yes. Most people can't read at .1 mil consistently on their scope. Now that they are out there, it is a nice feature but I would not choose one over the other unless all other variables were equal.

I know Superstool every post I have read on the Weaver Tactical everybody says that about the MOA adjustment with MIL reticle. To be honest I don't know how to range and all the other stuff you can do with FFP MIL-Dot. I just sight the zero at 100yrds and know where to hold at 200yrds. The longest deer shot I have taken has been right at 100yrds. Thats Georgia hunting.

I don't see how reading .1 mil has anything to do with it. The reticle is mil so that is not what they need to change. .1mils is about 1/3 MOA so it is not as fine of adjustment as 1/4 moa scope. The point I was trying to make was why make an "tactical" FFP long range scope and they not make the adjustments match the reticle. That is one of the whole points of an FFP. So no matter what mag you are on you can range and so also you can see your misses and very quickly dial in the correction. It just seems funny to me to go to all that work of an FFP and then not make it right. Hopefully they will also offer the mil adjustments in the future, as the scope sounds quite nice. But most tactical shooters these days really want matching reticle and adjustments. Edited by supertool73 - December/02/2010 at 09:36 |
