First snow of winter here in Olympia, WA. Craziness, expecting over 5 inches in the next 24 hours or so. Not bad for the first snow fall.

For some reason I always enjoy the first big snow storm of the year.

As long as I stay on my meds, I always enjoyed the first snowfall too Jeff.  Plow on the 4-wheeler and blower are ready to go!

I think by the time I get back to Lewistown up on the outfitters place there will be about 3 feet.  There was about and average of 18" and it has been snowing since Monday.  I love Montana!!!

And we have nice cold temps too.  6 below right now.  Tomorrow night will be about -20.  Really moves the elk down where I can get to them easier.

Not as much around our place, but seems like I've been shoveling enough. It will move the elk down though, which is good as long as you have access to the land they're on. Last year 81 head holed up 1600 below where I'd climbed in the dark. I walked down there but couldn't get landowner permission when I called the guy up. Still, it's awesome if you get one. I hate trying to cool meat down when it's above freezing.

Even if it is well below freezing if you don't get the shoulders and neck opened up you will lose a lot of meat to spoiling.  Really sucks to see that on elk.  Deer aren't near as bad.

That's one reason why I haven't gotten into bow hunting yet. It's tempting because guys I know have been pretty successful killing elk in September. But one of them lost a cow after taking (in my judgment) a poorly considered twilight shot. By the time he found it the next day, most of the meat was beyond salvage. It never dropped below 55 that night.

I've been amazed how much heat a bull elk will retain and have worked as hard and fast as I can to get in there and open up those places. One thing I don't care about is keeping a cape intact since I prefer a European mount anyway. That helps because we will just cut right up to the base of the head and skin the neck back.

Must be nice to have elk around but its about all I can do to drag a deer out of the woods but the boys would love to hunt them. What I'd like to shoot some day would be a bison -  I suppose I could practice up on Black Angus there seem to be some of those around here. Devil

You could put in for the bison hunts up here.  Never know what might happen.
