I have a 300 wsm and enjoy it a lot! But it is expensive to feed if you don't reload yourself. The Savage or the Tikka would be my choice, in the order. I also know first hand, that a 30-06 is more than adequate to take an elk. So is the 7mm-08, and the 308. All three of which are cheaper to buy ammo, and hurt less on the shoulder.

TIKKA stainless synthetic. 300 WSM is one of my favorites. The stainless Savage accustock guns are quite good also I have one in .243 that I like very much. Dont think you would go wrong with either of those two.

Any drawbacks to having a detachable magazine if you handload for it?

I like the Savage and the Tikka out of those choices, but you might want to put some thought into that muzzle brake on the Savage if you hunt without ear protection, that would make me lean toward the Tikka. Your shooting buddies and hunting partners will thank you for not having the brake. Good Luck.

My model 11 Savage has the Detachable box, and has no drawbacks at all. Savage shorty's are little bit longer than say a Remmy 700. Which allows a bit more room for long bullets. When I tried the Berger 185's my COAL was at 2.93, and they fed from the magazine just fine.

I have a Remington CDL SF in 300 WSM and really like it a lot. It's a real tack driver but I agree that any 300 magnum, short or long eats expensive ammo and wont do anything better than a 30 06 can do except shoot flatter.

It's possible to find a LNIB Kimber in 300wsm, which is a dandy rifle. If your not into used my choice is for the Abolt.
