The only models close, I know of, were a 2.5-8x36 and a 3.5-10x40. The VariX-II was available in 3-9x40.
It should spell it out in on the gold ring on the objective bell.

It maybe Vari-X ll. If memory servers me, in that power range and objective size, the Vari-X III came in 3.5-10x40.

(edited 'cause memory didn't server me... no Vari-X I in old lineup)

The only VariX-II I owned was a 2-7x33 and the glass was pretty bad. Even compared to other brands like the Burris FF it was poor.The VariX-III's I have are far better.
I think to get equivalent optics to the VariX-II in a new Leo, the VX-I is it. Hopefully other members can comment on them. Reviews here have generally been poor.
The present VX-II's have similar lenses to the older VariX-III's. I think the newer model would be a better choice.

 f13,if as you say your in need of an upgrade and are willing to spend $150 on a used scope(which I have no problems with)do your self a favor and consider one of these.  It's worth twice the price and at one time sold for as much. It's close to the Conquest in quality. And there are 3 reticle options.

If it's a Vari-X II it's comparable to the VX-I now. That being said, for that price if that's what it is, buy it. You can resell it for more than that. However, I'd not use it on my rifle, I'd buy it to resell. I have had a Simmons 8 Point and 2 Leupold VX-I's and one Vari-X II. To be honest, the Simmons 8 point while not my favorite scope, was better in low light and I couldn't tell a difference in daylight. The glass was just pretty lousy in the Leupolds. You'd be much better off with a Vortex Viper or Burris FFII or similar. The difference is night and day. Even the Nikon Prostaff I've used was better, although it wasn't great either. You can get those on clearance for $99 at Cabela's in 3-9x40. They are no where near as good as the Burris FFII or Vortex Viper, but they have better glass than the cheaper Leupolds I've had.

No, there is no 3-9X40 in the Vari X III series.  It's a Vari X II.

I have a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40 on a 7mm model 70 and it's the next scope I'll replace. I  liked it when it was new 12 or 13 years ago but most of todays mid range optics will blow its doors off optically speaking . Having said that I have never had any issues with it.

Not sure how up to date this is (doesn't list the VX-3 which has been out almost 2-years now).

IMO, Leupold's name/model scheme can be confusing;

- VARI-X III
- VX-III
- VX-3

I had the Vari-X II 3-9X40.  I killed a lot of game with that scope on several rifles.  However, the optical performance just plain sucks to virtually all of the mid-range scopes available now.

Get the 2-7 Viper while you can.  I mean it.  You will not be disappointed.
