It made me sick to read a letter to the editor of our paper this morning that a bunch of hunters on the east side of Canyon Ferry (a major reservoir on the Missouri river here in Montana) caught a herd out in the open and called all their friends in. According the letter, an FWP warden just watched as:

"Later when I returned from Townsend at 4 p.m. I came to the area where the same herd of elk was all crowded together in a 40-foot circle in the middle of a 2-acre wheat field very close to the pavement. On all four sides they were surrounded by 40 to 50 pickups full of hunters talking on their cell phones. The majority of the trucks already had one or two dead elk in the back. A couple dozen hunters were setting up their shooting tripods in the field. When I reported this massacre to FWP I was informed they were already on location watching the entire incident. They agreed this was not 'hunting.'"

That, my friends, is the definition of the slob hunter.
Reaction time is a factor...

God, I hope I never need meat that bad.  Why would you bother?  Where is "fair chase"  involved there?

Too many see the purchase of a hunting license as a waste of money unless they get their "fair share".

The gene pool obviously needs more chlorine, and I ain't talking about the elk! I am afraid I would have been sorely tempted to kill a few pickups at least. Sort of like the scene in Crocodile Dundee when some of the same sort were shooting kangaroos. Mad

Unfortunately I have some cousins that act like this, if they see it, they have to kill it.  I dream of going Elk hunting some day and what these people did is definitly not hunting.

Its the same greed that wiped out the huge herds of Bison.  These are the kind of people who have entirely missed concept of hunting as our forefathers did to survive.   There may come a time when you need these critters to survive and there wont be any.

Very sad to read about this. We do have "harvesting" in our country, but it is done only where the game numbers are very high and they have to be culled. This operation is then only done by proffesionals.

I've always wanted to hunt "slobs"...  I guess you could call ME a "slob hunter"...

I could not stand by and tolerate something like that.  There would be a confrontation...

Yeah, and you know all the people on the phones are calling all their slob buddies to come shoot some more.  Sad day.  That is not hunting at all.  I may not get any animals this year at the rate things are going, but at least I am out in the mountains really hunting.
