I was window shopping at SWFA and came upon a nice sale, it's the Vortex Viper with target dot reticle. With the sale price it's a no brainer except I'm a bit concerned about the reticle. I'm looking for a scope to put on my Rem 700 in 223 to be used for eastern woodchuck and some coyote hunting. There'll be no night hunting but some dawn and dusk shooting are a possibility. Anyone have experience with this scope and reticle? http://swfa.com/Vortex-65-20x44-Viper-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P11232.aspx
Thanks,
Sam

It is a fine target cross hair. I would choose the V plex for your intended purposes or bdc ret even if it meant stepping down to the 1 inch tube. I would only use the target dot for paper punching. That is me though.

The target dot is very hard to see in anything but great light. Its thin and precise. I think when i asked vortex CS the size was less than a MOA I wanna say like .6MOA but don't quote me on that its been a while since i looked at it. I would not get it for hunting unless you would be ok not being able to take shots at times.

I have this scope on my savage .30-06 and so far I love it. I have not hunted with yet. All I have done at this point is target shooting. I have no problem making out the reticle. Went shooting this weekend and at 100 yards I had three shots two holes about .325 at 100 yards. Thats not too shabby if you ask me.

I have the target dot on my Viper and do a mix of target and hunting (mostly prairie dogs + coyotes). Most of my hunting is in bright light but I have sighted through it in dim light at dusk and had no problem seeing the reticle with a variety of backdrops. At longer ranges, the dot may cover a good portion of a small target like a prairie dog. Very happy with it so far. Also, above 16X the eye relief is very critical and it is difficult to prevent tunneling in my experience...I use it as more of a spotting scope at the higher mag.

Specs on the vortex website say 0.19 MOA at max magnification (20 power) which gives approx. 0.6 MOA at 6.5 power

I'd be willing to give it a try, given its fantastic pricing. I think I'd use it strictly for target shooting in low light, though it's probably very serviceable for Dog work. |

The dot is very small and can be used for very good precision IMO. It is hard to see in low light though. Honestly I think the dot is as small as a lot of the crosses in duplex reticles. For target shooting and long range variminting I think it will work very well.
I put mine on a 223 WSSM with a 20 moa base. It should be great for popping yotes at long range. Edited by supertool73 - November/08/2010 at 14:03 |

I just pushed the buy button at SWFA, after thinking about the combo hunting situations I'd use this scope in i.e. 200-300 yard shots at woodchucks and closer lower light in the brush type shots at coyotes, I opted for a Vortex 4-12x40 Viper. Thanks for the input everyone! http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-12x40-Viper-Rifle-Scope-P10820.aspx Sam

Just got an email from the folks at SWFA saying that my Vortex 4-12x40 Viper with V-Plex reticle has shipped, I'm excitedI'll give a report as soon as I try her out. Thanks to all for the input.

let me know how you like it, i wanted really thin crosshairs thus i think i will lean towards the Tdot even though it starts off at a higher mag. |

I will, the only reason I went with the V-Plex reticle at a lower magnification is because the more I thought about it, both reticles would be good for woodchuck shooting but I figured that a bit thicker reticle might be more useful for the coyote part of intended use.
