Springs play a huge role in making a firearm work. Take the poll, no googling, just your gut feel.

We are not talking about abused springs, just normal workload as per design.

After a couple of days I will post a very interesting article on springs.

It depends on the spring's design and what material it's made of.

Depending on quality and coil design or style "Some" springs do loose their origional set. Magazine springs in some semi-auto pistols and some AR/M-16's are exhibit "A" in my argument.

My experience has been mostly with pistol magazine springs. I have left some of my magazines loaded for a couple of years and while they do take on a set there have been no noticeable ill effects but the ones that I load, shoot and re load do wear out after a while. My preferred springs for my pistols are Wolff springs http://www.gunsprings.com

yes---also some designs "take a set" different than others. Some of wolfs springs are variable compression at its hard to tell were the loss occured. Night force uses tumbled titanium leaf in the nxs while using coil in their br series to take advantages of properties they do or don't want. Also the force constant can change within the spring due to poor manufacture control or a weakness in the material.

It also depends on how much sustained load the spring is under when at rest.

Hope "springs" eternal. I've gotten some of the Tubbs springs because they're supposedly longer-lasting. And I have two spare op-rod springs for the M1...but that's as much to increase the longevity of the rifle (along with some other spare parts) as it is to be prepared for a more immediate failure.
Reaction time is a factor...

The answer to the question is no, if you note 8shots' qualifiers "left compressed" and "normal workload per design". It makes no difference to the metal if it is compressed or not for long periods of time. That is not to say that springs don't wear out ... They do. They wear out after repeated cycles of compression and release, which fatigues the metal. You can use a 50 year old magazine that was stored loaded without issue, but a pistol competitor can have a spring wear out in months if it has been loaded and unloaded thousands of times.

Exactly correct. IIRC the government did some long-term tests on just this and found that there was no loss of tension after years of storage of loaded magazines. It is the cycling from compression and release that causes springs to "wear out."
