First, you need to tell us what you are going to be using your new rifle to do.  Second, we need to know maximum ranges what price ranges you are really wanting to spend.

Good Call, I'd like it to be multiple purpose, don't have a ton of money so I'd like one decent set up, 400-500 yards eventually,$ 500-600

Oh, one more thing, I want something powerful, not sure how powerful you need for 500 yards, 16? 18? 22,

Mr. Jones, please read the forum rules you agreed to when registering your OT account, specifically Rule # 3...

http://www.opticstalk.com/the-ot-rules_topic5473.html

This site is operated by SWFA, an optics retailer, and it's not cool to use the forum they provide for us to advertise, link to, or in any way discuss their competitors here.  It's just common courtesy to our host.

Thanks!
Ted

Keep an eye on the SampleList  It is also run by SWFA.  IT has some awesome deals on it 99% of the time.  There are some very nice Zeiss Conquest scopes on there for amazing prices.  There are also some Nikons and even one you mentioned.

You mentioned another retailer that someone could come on this forum look at them and then go to them for products.  We do not mention any name of any retailer that sales a product that SWFA also sells.  They pay for the site for us to learn and enjoy.  Its bad taste to direct anyone to someone else, directly or indirectly.

NO biggie its been fixed.

One thing to keep in mind with Nikons would be the limited amount of elevation travel they come with.  I dont' think it will hurt you out to 500 yds but it may if you ever decide to go out farther.

I like a 6x with BDC turrets for .308.  Hensoldt and Kahles come to mind.  For large deer the .308 is good to about 550, for smaller deer out to about 700, maybe a little more.  Not saying anyone SHOULD take those shots, just some perspective on capabilities of the weapon.  A 6x scope with BDC turrets and a good reticle is fast, efficient.  6x is not too much magnification to take shorter shots, not too low mag to take the longer range shots.  I would have no problem with elk or moose at 400 yards with .308, 6x, 168-175gr bullets.  You would want to practice A LOT at that range if you intend to hunt something at that range.
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

How do you see a deer at 700 yards with just a 6 mag? Ive used that at 100 yards

6x at 700 yards would be about like open sights at 115.  Pretty easy to see...
