I just got a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308 and I want to get a good middle of the road $$$ scope. I will hunt maybe once every two years for white tail, mule deer, or hog. The average shot will take place at 100 to 200 yards. On the flip side, this rifle will serve punching paper between 100 and 500 yards. I want a BDC reticle for quick holdover, and want the hold over points to be reasonably accurate. I keep feeling like I should just get a Leupold and be dont with it, but I want to be sure that I get the most for my dollar and the competition is stiff in this range. The new Redfields are nice, but I dont know enough about there current reputation under Leupie. I like the Nikon Buckmaster, the Bushy elite 3200, want to know more about the 3-9 Nikon Monarch UCC ... is it a monarch or not?, or should I go with a Weaver or Sightron instead. Vortex Viper is an option as well. Summary: 1 to 500 yard shots with a BDC reticle, a stout scope that can survive hunts, good glass that is sharp out to 500 yards, side wheel prallax if possible. What about Bushnell Trophy XLT with 600 yd BDC? Thanks for any help ahead of time, cant wait to hear what you guys think.

WOW, I just read a post like mine a few posts down with the same dollar amount..... sorry for a re-post with the same question. I will go see what this C3 reticle is all about. If anyone has info on the Nikon Monarch UCC and if it is the same as other Monarchs, please comment. Also, how does the Nikon Buckmaster stack up against the Monarch?

There may be no comparison here, but I bought one of the Vortex Crossfire 6-24 $99.00 jobbers and to be honest.... it was optically not as good as an old Bushnell Scopechief I had. mechanically it was GREAT, but the optics on the upper end were not good and the prallax was to fussy and never fully focused. I assume the Viper is head and tails above the crossfire? I wish they had a BDC reticle on the Viper.

Crossfire and Viper are not really comparable. The Viper is a much much better scope, optics are actually pretty good in them.

ALSO: This is a biggy, I want generous eye relief 3.7 to 5". A question for you guys, if I have bad vision and am looking through a scope, is my vision corrected by the scope 100%, or would I still focus better if I had a pair of glasses on?

There aren't to many eye relief out @5".Every scope is different so you will have to read all the specs.
I wear bi-focals so most of the time I adjust while wearing my glasses. The only time I don't wear my glasses is when I'm shooting a banger[338 or my 460S&W]I use my Swaro Z5 on those rifles as they have plenty of ER.My Bushnell elite 6500 /2.5-16 also serves me well, with plenty of ER.
The elite 6500 might be your best bet, good glass, rainguard, large diopter & life time warrenty.

Agreed with that viper recommendation. The one posted is a $400 scope, so you are really getting alot more for your money. The Viper and Crossfire are also manufactured in different plants in different countries, so no comparison there.

the elite 6500 also range from $650-950. a better recomendati wouldbe the 4200 line, which is drectly with which the viper line competes. the 4200 line also runs north of $450. thus, in your price range of only $250 I think your best bet is the viper. you get $400 of scope for $240.

For the original poster, I would pourchase a 4-16X World Class Tasco. I had one on the .375-.416 Remington until I replaced it with a 6500 2 1/2-16X50. The .340 Weatherby still has a 4-16X Tasco. The Tasco worked for years and is still good. It is not in your price range, though, and that can be a deal killer. It is about $100.
Have you compared the Z5 side by side with the 6500?
I just ordered a Z5 5-25X52 and have a 6500 4 1/2-30X50. Next Sunday I plan to do a lot of comparing. If the Z5 is not LOT better I will send it back.

I like the vortex viper you have all pointed out, I just hate not having the BDC reticle. The Nikon
Monarch UCC has 4" eye relief and the Buckmaster at 3.6", either of which have a BDC Reticle. Are these bad scopes for $225.00. Would the Vortex Viper guys here be willing to say that the Viper is far enough ahead of the competition to drop wanting the BDC to obtain higher qaulity optics for there standard x reticle? I am thinking there are not alot of weaver/sightron fans in the house :) I dont know which brand is the best, and there is way to much cool aid out there to drink, so I am really putting alot of stock into what all of your opinions are, thanks again for all of the tips and info.

Here is a good option for you with a bdc...
Apparently... and this is just what I have heard and seen from comparison, these are Weaver Super Slam scopes branded with the Nitrex name. They are currently offering a $100 rebate. You can find this scope here at SWFA or a little birdie told me that you can find it elsewhere for a lot cheaper, and then apply for SWFA price matching, which should get this for you right around $220-$240 Compare it to this $560 Weaver and you will see what I mean. Looks like the best deal out there to me.
