Trooper Jeff Huovinen of the Michigan State Police Post in Mt. Pleasant is investigating a report of a "booby trap" device found on private property in Sherman Township in Gladwin County.

On Friday, a hunter found a copper pipe approximately 15 inches off the ground with four razor-edged broadheads mounted to it, and neither he nor the property owners knows how it got there.

"It would be at a height five inches below the kneecap," said Huovinen. "I have fears of copycats (when word gets out).

"The person who found it doesn't want to be named as finding the thing."

The metal device was a "copper pole pounded into the ground" with four broadheads facing opposite directions, like arrows on a weather vane, set a few inches apart was found in the woods.

"The hunter was allowed to go out there by the property owners," said Huovinen. "The property is located near the Skeels area near Meridian in Gladwin County."

The hunter provided a photograph taken from his cell phone of the device with the understanding that his name would not be mentioned.

"The property owners (who also don't want to be mentioned) feel terrible about what this," said Huovinen."

The weapons offense is under investigation.

Eric LaFollette, archery manager at Jay's Sporting Goods in Clare, said that he has never heard of anyone finding such a device.

"Hunters do get to squabbling with each other," said LaFollette. "I've never heard of anything like this being found.

Someone spent alot of time makeing this and while very sharp, I'm not sure how effective it would be.

Just remember the damage a broadhead does to a deer upon entry.  I haven't bow hunted in a while, but was reminded on my recent hog hunt (it was also bow season for white tails) in Texas. Just a standard broadhead that looked much like those in the picture.  Think about what that would do to human "bone and sinew" for someone going at a reasonably fast clip through the woods.  Sharpened sticks on similar mounts... only made of wood, caused severe damage.  I would not want to be the one who walked into it.  Not killing, mounted as it was, but certainly crippling...

If that had been found in Ky. there would have to be a pot field close by.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.
