looking for a cheap scope to go on my wifes 243 hunting rifle. it currently has an old old leupold variX II that has real fine crosshairs that you can't see once it starts getting near dark. looking for suggestions at narrowing down the pack.

I'd also consider this one for it's low light reticle:

Perhaps you will find this article useful:
For what its worth, I think that if you are trying to stay in the ~$120-$130 range, Sightron S1 with 34 reticle is the way to go. For ~$150, or there abouts, Sightron is still a good option, as is Redfield Revolution. For ~$200, I really liked Vortex Diamondback. ILya

Where are you finding a vortex diamondback 3-9x40 scope for $150? The cheapest I can find is about $180 plus shipping. After reading that page, for $150 I'll go with the diamondback I I can find one for that price, otherwise I'll probably go with the Burris for $150 shipped.

My bad. That was a typo. I found Diamondback to be the best $200 scope out of the bunch. ILya

You didn't list it but the vortex vipers in 2-7 would be a great scope for the money. plenty of eye relief and great in low light with the C3 reticle. And its only slighly over the 150 mark but its leaps and bounds over any of the scopes you've listed already.

If you are looking for a value scope I am very happy with my Pentax Pioneer for $109. These scopes are reported to be built by Burris and I will say I can't dispute it as mine appears to be an exact fullfield II clone. I have two a 3-9 and a 4.5-14. Very nice scopes for the $$.
