I have a older bar 7MM mag. it weighs about 10 lbs. Jason The Remy 742 Auto in 243 I also have jammed about 20 years ago after having about 2 boxes of rounds run thru it, it still sits in a closet. Ive never liked it really.... The BLR would be my choice for him, it weighs 6.8 lbs. in the 308. Then a nice little Trijicon 3x9 weighs 12.8 lbs, so another lb. of ammo say. Im just guessing it would weigh 8 lbs. Thats a way less then 10 when you throw it up....Im hoping he does not use a sling cause then he's probably looking at 9 lbs and as you say he might as well deal with the old Bar Rifle.
I love my Bar Rifle, nice rifle for sure, just to heavy any more , Im spoiled too.

1) you can NEVER have too many BARs!! 2) You can never go wrong with Browning I know you want it to be a surprise and all, but you might want to take him to a gun shop and let him HOLD different ones that "you" are looking at. If that doesn't give you a better idea of what he likes, then you might just have to spring it on him with a card saying...."Go pick out a rifle and scope..it's on me and mom!" I know the gift is a WONDERFUL idea....and he probably would never let you know it wasn't what he really wanted if it was indeed a second choice for him...but getting him EXACTLY what he wants...Priceless!! I wish I could win the lottery as I day dream a lot about going and picking my dad up and taking him to look at trucks. He of course wouldn't know I had won...and buying him the truck he likes the best! Is it father's day or something.....LOL I wish you the best in your quest---BBoy623

I love the Savage 99 suggestion! They aren't too hard to find in .308 and I sure remember my uncle's being pretty darn light.

Pyro you trying to get people in trouble again????
You did it to me remember? Last year when Reed's had the same sale price and I couldn't resist buy an Abolt Medallion in 308? Beautiful gun but not quite as accurate as my Savages. Needs some trigger work!
Oh BTW The SSALT GEN IIs are in!!!!! Mine shipped yesterday!

I bought a Abolt last year from them and I live in PA!

Even paying shipping, and transfer fees Reed's is a hell of a lot cheaper than any of my local options.
