I have a Remington 700 LTR. I am asking if the Leupold Mark IV 3.5-10x40 with duplex reticle would be a good choice for dual purpose shooting, both hunting and target. Thanks for the input.

I would think so.  That said whats your price range that your trying to stay in and maybe we can give you some options to compare with the Leupold.

I am willing to spend as much as the rifle cost, say $1,000 range.

Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 or Minox Z5 3-15x42!

I'd go with something like the Bushnell 3-12X44 (http://swfa.com/Bushnell-3-12x44-Elite-4200-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P45484.aspx) or, if it were available today, the Vortex 4-16 PST. Another option, often mentioned here - and one I've used on an LTR - is the SS 3-9X40. As far as I'm concerned, there are two kinds of scopes you might mount on a rifle used for hunting:

  1. Any decent duplex reticle scope with a bottom end of 1-4 mag. and top in the 8-12 range. Then sight it in for max. point blank range with a tight kill zone of 4". With my .308 LTR that's what I used to do (with a fixed 4X Leupold) and it worked fine out to 320 yards. No need for field-adjustable turrets or spending more than $400 (price of a Zeiss Conquest).

But it will not be a useful for target shooting unless your definition of that is slapping paper @ 100 yards all day long.

  2. A good quality scope with a magnification range on the low end between 1-4 and a high end between 8-16, with a gradated reticle with uniform sub-tensions, e.g. mil dot, and turrets that match, e.g. 1/10th mil turrets. It would ideally be first focal plane but second focal plane works well too if the max. mag. is 10X or less. This scope would allow you to hunt and to target shoot out past 500 yards. Why? Because you can either use the gradated reticle, the matching turrets, or both in combination to compensate for elevation and windage.
The Leupold Mark 4, even in its FFP version, is neither of these. It could be if they sold it with matching turrets.
Reaction time is a factor...
