Recently purchased a Rossi in .243 as my daughter’s first deer rifle.  We’re having some trouble getting it sighted in.  I believe it’s a problem with the scope, but wanted to check here as well for anything else to consider since this is my first experience with a break-action rifle.

I’m on paper at 100yds.  I can get right/left sorted fine.  Elevation is killing me.  Is there anything special needed to address when sighting-in a break action?  I am using a table with rests.

A few notes.  Money is tight and I had to go with a package purchase.  When money eases up I’m already looking at a Burris FF2 (or equiv) to replace the Simmons 8pt that came with it.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

What type of mounts? You may have to shim.

I'll have to double-check the type of mounts.  I watched the fella mounting/bore sighting at the store rip up the rings that came with the package and replace with Weaver-style rings. I can't remember if he replaced the base as well.  At least he didn't charge me for the upgrade.

It's a one-piece base.  Everything is tight.  No detectible slop or wiggle.

Assuming you have maxed out the elevation, the rear will have to be shimmed to make the poa raise the barrel. Take it back to the sellor, or contact Brownells website for shims. Simmons scopes are pretty good deal considering you get it and the gun both. One piece bases are the best to shim as the relationship of the rings to the scope stays the same.

Sorry Dale, I haven't made myself clear in my original post.

I'm shooting groups of 3.  First two will be high while the third will be low.  And I'm not talking 5" groups either.  I'm talking top of paper to bottom of paper.  I'm not a great shot, but I'm not that bad either.  Furthermore, I'm using a shooting rest.

I haven't maxed out elevation.  Actually I haven't made too many adjustments since I haven't gotten regular groups.

I've had mixed results with Simmons products.  I thought the package would be a good deal to get through this season while $$ was tight and replace it over the summer.

NC:

Sounds like your scope may be shot out.

Do you have any other scopes that you can check it with?? Maybe a buds scope??

Sorry for all your trouble, partner.

Cheaptrick,

Thanks!  I was thinking it's the scope, but wanted to rule out anything simple on the rifle itself that I might be overlooking.  Guess I'm on the right path and just need to install some quality optics.  I don't have a scope to borrow, but I did remove the scope altogether and went with the irons at 30 yds.  Shot well enough.

So far I really like the .243.  May have to get another for myself.

GO CANES!!!

NC:

I've had my fair share of trouble with scopes that have puked under fire!!

Some of these have been from the "top shelf" variety, believe it or not.

Strangely, I have had some not so big name scopes, like a Nikon Buckmaster, that have held up on high recoil firearms like a .300 Remington Ultra Mag.

I would hardily recommend the Buckmaster for your rifle.

With Nikon's recent upgrades to this model and more than a few favorable reviews from optics gurus that I respect, I believe you can get one mounted on your rifle and you'll be very satisfied.

As an aside, the Nikoplex reticle is as good as a hunting reticle as you could hope for.

My all time "bang for the buck" scope right now is a Zeiss Conquest. If your budget will allow it, or like in my case the wife, you could have all the scope one could want in a hunting setup. In my opinion, of course.

That said, do your self a favor and go to a gunshop that handles these and others you may be interested in, and look at them for yourself.

Please contact SWFA and make your purchase from them too. They will meet or beat the competition on any scope of your choosing, and you'll be supporting the good folks that keep this website up and running for us all.

Best wishes!!.....cheaptrick
